Damn, who’s that handsome cover model??

by JD on January 31, 2007

F&H News Cover

Proving without a doubt that the outdoor media has extremely low standards when it comes to models, here’s my second cover shot in a month…

Actually, I was kinda disappointed. You see, I’ve been hoping for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year honors, but they’ve yet to call. I know, because I’ve been sitting by the phone 24-7 waiting…and waiting…and waiting. Hmmm, maybe they don’t have the right number.

Speaking of magazines, the cover of Forbes wouldn’t suck, either, but that’s probably not in the cards anytime soon. Of course, in my days of being a wanna-be pop star, I figured the Rolling Stone cover was a forgone conclusion but, alas, that didn’t pan out. Oh well, I’ve still got my old music video that I’ll post here at some point.

Anyway, thanks to the Fishing & Hunting News gang for running my ugly mug on the upcoming issue of California edition. Check it out for the latest scoop on steelheading and all things hunting and fishing in the Golden State. www.fishingandhuntingnews.com

A day in the life of Biscut Eater

by JD on January 30, 2007

Biscut Eater & Friends

Biscuit Eater could sense something big was about to happen.

There was a nervous electricity in the water and all the others of his kind seemed to be jittery. A low,
metallic sound was emanating from the far end of the concrete lane he’d called home for his entire life. The sound was soft at first but it was getting louder by the second. Something unfamiliar…

Time for some tropical “Panfishing”

by JD on January 28, 2007

A nice goatfish from Kauai

Not at all knowing what to expect, I lob a 1/4-ounce Kastmaster high across the water and watch it shimmer in the morning sun. When it plops back to earth, I let the silver lure sink for a moment before I start cranking.

I’ve never wet a line in this place and don’t have a clue what may be lurking around the rocks…if anything.

In short order – on the second crank of the reel handle to be exact – I get abrupt and violent confirmation that there are indeed some fish here when something incredibly strong atomizes my lure.

Godzilla-sized Brookie, eh!

by JD on January 28, 2007

I know, I know…it looks like I got a little creative with Photoshop on this one, but this picture is legit. What you’re looking at is the largest brook trout anybody has laid hands in at least 90 years and, perhaps ever.

The massive brookie was taken in the fall by Tim Matheson of Serridon, Manitoba in Manitoba’s Lake Barbe. The really cool part of the story is the fish didn’t end up on the barbe…

Big Fred at the Okeechobee weigh-in

Our man Big Fred Contaoi made a big splash at FLW Wal-Mart tournament at Lake Okeechobee this week — unfortunately it wasn’t for a giant sack of bass.

Fishing was tough and Fred finished up in 172nd place but he went out with a big finish on his final day by falling out of the boat — in front of several other boats.

Big Fred the Bass Masher

Our budding bass star, Big Fred Contaoi, entered the first tournament of his pro career as a memeber of the Orange County Chopper team on Wednesday on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.

WIth low, tough water conditions and only a few days of fishing the lake in his life, Fred battled through Day 1 with 3 fish for just over 4 pounds. He missed a couple others and lost a really big one that popped the line like a .22 shot. He ended the day in 187th place.

Nice king!

“You gotta love those coastal kings…they’ll bite until their dying day,” says Harrison Ibach of McKinleyville, CA, who’s the leader in the clubhouse with this dazzling (and, if you look closely, drizzling), finless darkie. He caught this potential “Smoker of the Year” contest winner on a Kwikfish.

Now, that’s a Lunker!

by JD on January 23, 2007

Lunker Fish!

Forget tarpon, steelhead, bones or peacocks.

If you’re truly looking for some real sport with the ol’ fly rod, give paedocypris progenetica a shot this winter.

Lurking in the wonderfully steamy peat wetlands of Southeast Asia, paedocypris progenetica, is , according to scientists, the world’s smallest fish. The tiny critters average under 8 millimeters in length, though some lunkers to nearly 9 millimeters possible — if you know where to look (My insider sources tell me that Borneo is a good place to begin your quest for HAWGS).
