Fishing Report, January 15

January 15, 2007

Egg-Eater

Hey everybody…welcome to my new and improved fishing report here on fishwithjd.com.

Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening lately…

SPEAKING SCHEDULE
First off, don’t forget I’ll be at the International Sportsmen’s Expo in Sacramento this week, doing seminars on Salmon and Steelhead fishing. I’ll take the stage at the California Sportsmen Theater at 5:30 PM on Thursday, Jan. 18 and then again at 7:30 PM on Friday evening. I’ll also be a part of the Salmon/Steelhead Expert Panel at 1:30 PM on Sunday with fellow guides Kevin Brock, Greg Squires, Bob Sparre and Rick Soto.

AMERICAN RIVER
There are winter fish in the system — and some real dandies, too. Most folks have been fishing up around Sailor Bar and the Hatchery, but I’ve been working lower down and getting into 2 to 5 adults a day on plugs and bait.

The steelies have been 8-9 pounds on average, but we’re also seeing some bruisers in the mid teens. In fact, I wouldn’t be totally surprised to see a fish break the 20-pound mark here this year.

Flows are holding steady at 2,000 cfs.

SECRET TROUT
I’ve ben hitting my secret trouts tream latley and have been getting 20-50 bites per day on rainbows from 14-18 inches. Lots of catch & release fun!!

DELTA STRIPERS
The swimbait bite has tapered off due to the c-c-c-old water temps, but guys dunking shad have been seeing sdecent fish to 12 pounds in the Rio Vista area. Until the water temp comes back up, I’ll stick with the trout & steelies.
