American River Steelhead
We still have some winter-run steelhead around though this is typically when we see their numbers drop off. The good news is, however, the spring “football” steelhead generally start making a good showing at the beginning of March!
Lately, it’s been 1-3 adult fish up to 8 pounds per trip and 6 to a dozen chrome halfpounders in the 1- to 2-pound class. I’ve been side-drifting and pulling plugs and it’s been about a 50-50 mix.
The American received some color from the recent rains…just enough, in fact, to make it beautiful. Flows have been holding steady at 1,700 cfs.
Delta Stripers
We had a nice shot of fish last week between storms but then the water got muddy and stripers became increasingly difficult to find.

This round of storms was also very cold, so that should complicate things even more. It’s about time for the bass to start making the run up the rivers, so we’re kind of in a transition period right now. Thing should start to pop again soon, however!
On recent trips, I was able to find enough clear water to throw swimbaits but that’s a tough bet now. Trolling has been a better option since the water clouded up.
Lake Tahoe
Don’t forget — we’re gearing up for our Tahoe jig trips in July and August. Up there, we do a half-day with light tackle for macks…it’s a blast and limits are pretty much the rule every outing. For more info, feel free to email me at the contact address on my guide site: thesportfisher.com
