SHARKS!
We did our first light tackle shark fishing trip of the year on Saturday and the bite was pretty much like usual: steady to wide open all day long. And like normal, we gave up long before the fish did.
We never went more than about 10 minutes without a fish on the entire outing and had a few doubles as well.
With chunk bait in 3-7 feet of water, the sharkin’ was extremely good, and in that shallow water, most of the fish jumped when hooked…very cool!
We’ve also been experiencing some excellent steelie fishing on the American, so read on…
American River
Well, it was another solid week here for steelies. We averaged 2-4 adult fish most days and a good crop of wild, chrome halfpounders in the 12- to 16-inch range.
The adults have mostly been fresh spring-run fish in the 2- to 8-pound class, with the occasional late winter kelt.
We’ve been getting up to 25 bites a day side-drifting bait, though we’ve also caught a few on plugs here and there in a couple special spots. The river’s been gorgeous and we’ve had it totally to ourselves for two weeks now!
Sacramento River
The first waves of bass hit the Sac Metro area last week and there were fish from the Brickyards to Verona and beyond. This bite is only going to improve as April arrives, so get ready. We’ll be on the Feather, Sac and American, following the fish around. With low water this year, it could be a rockin’ spring!
Lake Tahoe
Don’t forget we’ll be running light tackle jigging trips for macks in Lake Tahoe in July and August…lots of fun and limits are almost a no-brainer.
The trips will launch out of the uncrowded West Shore, just 6 miles south of Tahoe City. No cattle boats to deal with over here!
