2007: Humpies and kings, oh my!

While there’s lots of gloom and doom (the Sacramento River, for example) regarding this year’s projected salmon runs along the West Coast, there are also some bright spots.

According to my pal Andy Martin at Fishing & Hunting News

“The Klamath’s in-river sport quota is one of the biggest in years (10,600 I think),” he says. “The ocean season from Humbug Mountian, Ore., (Port Orford) to Horse Mountian, Calif. (Eureka) is the longest in 17 years, and this time without a quota or early closure.”

Up in Washington State, there should also be a monster humpy (pink salmon) run this summer. In fact, this year’s forecast is the third highest ever, with 3.3 million pinks headed back to Puget Sound rivers.

“Four-fish limits in the Sound and the Skykomish, Snohomish and Green river,” he says. “Easy urban fishing!”

Further north, the Fraser River in B.C. is supposed to get 19 million pinks this year.

Of course, these are all forecasts and we know how those can go…
