Sometimes, you’ve got to throw them the ol’ change-up…
April 23, 2007

Kinda like that hot redheaded girlfriend you used to have back in high school, spring chinook are notoriously kookey. One minute, they’ll bite like barracudas and the next…PRESTO…it’s like somebody threw the big switch and the action goes into the tank.
As you know from several Salmon Trout Steelheaderarticles I’ve written in the past, I’m a big fan of shaking things up for springers; giving them something a little different to look at. After all, these goofy, fickle creatures swim to a different beat, so thinking a little outside the box is always a good plan.
That’s exactly what Jake Martinson did on Sunday when he went bank fishing for springers in a small stream in Southwest Washington (we’ll leave the name out as the internet has already killed too many rivers). The local gang of bankies were all fishing sand shrimp to no avail, so Jake gave the fish a little something different to look at…eggs. He immediately got bit and landed a nice king.
Later, he switched to a jig and float rig — just for grins — and ended up finishing off his limit on a day when most everybody else went home empty handed. Nice work, dude…throwing them a change-up (and a gyro-ball with that jig) was the ticket. Though the kid’s only a senior in high school, everybody would do well to follow his lead…
