Fishing Report Nov. 17, 2007

King Salmon, American River

Okay, so it’s been a while since my last fishing report — believe, me, I’ve been hearing about it! So, would you buy it if I told you that my dog ate it? Wait I don’t have a dog anymore…Um, my kid flushed it down the toilet? It was stolen, yea, that’s it. Somebody stole my fishing report, but I’ve got it back now and here we go…

First off, here’s a nice 25-lb. king Tony Manuel of Sacramento caught with me while fishing the American River on Thursday evening. The way things have gone this season, anytime a king is caught in the Valley, it’s noteworthy. We did a night run on the American, where I saw more boats than fish (3 boats and 1 rolling king). In talking with the other boats, this was the only fish taken that night.

Luckily, we’ve got more interesting things to talk about…

The Delta striper fishing has been really good this month and, yesterday, we had one barnburner of an outing!

We hooked so many fish that I lost count (which is never a bad thing!). All of the bass were taken on an outgoing tide while tossing swimbaits and jigging with 1-ounce Crippled herrings.

Double and triple headers were pretty common all afternoon as we encountered roving pack after pack of fish.

As you can see, the stripers were all of a very nice grade.

Striper fishing should continue on nicely for several weeks as the water temperature is still quite warm for this late in the year and the water conditions in the Delta are perfectly clear.

Until we get a big cold snap and/or a high volume of muddy runoff moving down the Valley rivers, the stripers are going to be hanging around and eating like crazy.

I’ll be off next week for Thanksgiving but back at it the following week.

Okay, since we missed a month’s worth of reports, let’s go back a little further.

I did a week on the Trinity in late October and we found some beautiful kings like this one Tony S. is holding. Of course, I kinda hit it right in the lull between big pushes of fish, but we still caught our fish.

It had rained a lot the week before and a bunch of kings and steelies moved upriver. The week after I left, I got word that a whole new push of chromers piled into the river.

We caught all but one of our fish that week on back-bounced roe (1 came on a Kwikfish) and everybody really did a great job bouncing with light weights in tight spots. Nice job, boys!

After that, I did a week in Baja and we caught a whole bunch of cool stuff…here I am with a marlin.

So, what’s next?

Delta striper fishing will continue to be main focus over the next month and then we’ll switch over to steelhead fishing.
