River Menaces: Pinepeds and Pinheads

November 29, 2007

I get it that sea lions eat salmon, but it kills me to see them 100 miles inland (in downtown Sacramento) eating salmon…especially in a year like this when we don’t have many. When I got to thinking about it, I’d say it’s been 8 years since I’ve gone a day without seeing at least one of these beasts down at the Sacramento/American river confluence.

The sea lion wasn’t the only one messing with the kings…here’s a loser I watched upstream, hurling soft ball sized stones at spawning salmon:

Here’s yet another sea lion going to town on a Chinook:

And as we floated over the scene, we got a look at the carcass before the beast came back to finish it…

    Sweet!

Honestly, doesn’t bother me to see nature’s critters eating other critters.

It’s what they do, and nature is filled with opportunists.

I mean, why would you want to chase salmon in the vast depths of the ocean when you can swim up river and eat them when they’re all stacked up, buffet-style.

Now, seeing some douche-lord tossing rocks at redds …

That’s worth a WWE smack down.
