Name that fish!
May 30, 2008

Okay, here we go with yet another round of the Name that Fish Contest!
The rules are simple: In the comments section at the end of the story, give us your best guess as to what this guy is. The first correct answer wins a pack of C.A.L. jerkbaits from DOA Lures.
Let’s see if our most recent winner, MJP (you never sent me your address to ship you your lures, by the way) can make it two in a row.
Need some hints?
• This dude can be found from Northern California to the eastern Bering Sea in Alaska.
• It eats mainly groundfish (as in bottomfish…not fish that have been run through a blender, of course!)
• It’s a significant food source for Steller sea lions
• He’s a lucky SOB because, when landed by fishermen, an enzyme released from a parasite he carries causes softening of the flesh that makes this fish very unfit for market, so they’re not targeted much (yet).
And, here’s a bit larger photo for you to take a look at:

sablefish?
or maybe a snailfish?
the pic is hard to identify, so maybe a pollock?
i donno, some kind of sole maybe.
yellowfin sole?
Or some kind of rock fish?
This one’s easy.
It’s an Eastern Hungarian blue-bellied death sole.
quit lying you try hard
jk…i have no idea
The fish is an Arrowtooth Flounder. (Atheresthes stomias)
I beleave it is a Arrow Tooth Flounder. I think I caught a couple of these in Alaska , while fishing for halibut. The Capain said throw them back they were were not good eating? MJP 17960 Squirrel haven ln. Meadow Vista Ca 95722
i actually believe it is a french sole, these are quite popular just above queen elizabeth islands on the pacific coast. i am not sure if french sole is the proper name but thats what they are called where we have seen them.
dover sole?
also common sole
if not any of those sole, maybe a rex sole.
Well, I guess it’s time to reveal this round’s answer. Que the tension-building music!
• To start with, as usual, Sabalow produced the best answer. However, true to form, he was 1000% wrong!
• Joel D. gets honorable mention for being being a prolific guesser. Now get back to work!
• The good news for Michael J. Peckham, last month’s winner, is he was right again this time around with his answer of arrowtooth flounder. The BAD NEWS, though, is his answer came in 6 hours and change after Jim Ponsford, who clocked in at 1:46 pm on May 31.
So, Jim, send me an email via the contact section of this website with your address and I’ll send you your lures.
Thanks for playing and tune in again next month for another fun and exciting round of Name that Fish. Until then, this is Biff Whitman signing off!
