Five-year-old Max “Maxinaw” Mader of Northern California caught this nice lake trout on Lake Tahoe while fishing with me and his dad Phil last week.
Even more fun than reeling the fish in, of course, was touching it and getting coated in slime. And then there was the high point of the outing for Max: When I cleaned the mack at the end of the day…
Judging by that smile, I’d say the kid has the bug already!

The Aug. 7, 2008 issue of Fishing & Hunting News was the final one.
After 58 years, Fishing & Hunting News is going under. Poor ad sales and a generally bad economy have forced Outdoor Empire Publishing to cease publishing the magazine after the Aug. 7 issue.
At the end, F&H News had 12 state editions and nearly 65,000 subscribers.
But it’s not just bad news for F&H News’ readers. The outfit had 23 employees and over twice that many freelancers who are all out of work now.

Had I been carrying a wide-angle lens with me when I went into Terrace, B.C.’s Misty River Tackle, I could have done the Great Wall of Spin-N-Glos justice, but I just had a standard lens. Still you get the feeling that they like their Spin-N-Glos on the Skeena River, eh?

Twenty-four year-old professional bass angler, Michael Bennett of Lincoln, CA mopped up the field at the Wal-Mart FLW Tour’s Forrest Wood Cup over the weekend and won a cool $1 million for his efforts.

Just about every river has a slackwater salmon spot. You know what I’m talking about here: one of those spots that’s too slow for back-bouncing, backtrolling, drift fishing or even bobbers. Of course, it always seems that the fish pile up into these zones like crazy, right?
I suppose a guy could catch a few fish tossing spinners or spoons in such a spot, but I prefer to cover more water on the troll.
