Why is this man smiling??

by JD on January 30, 2009

Just exactly why this guy is so happy…well…I’ll let you be the judge of that! Seems that the fish is a bit “blushed up” as well. Um, anyway, this fine 2009 Smoker of the Year Contest entry comes compliments of our ol pal “Prince of Darkness Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motorsports Guide Service. In his own words:

Some Cool New Gear

by JD on January 29, 2009

Well, Reilly and I have been at sports shows pretty much all month and, while wandering the hallowed halls, we ran across some interesting…and totally random…cool fishing stuff out there.

In no particular order, here are a few things that tickled our collective fancies…

Monster Quest

by JD on January 28, 2009

The waters of Northern California’s Lake Natoma look serene enough, but there are monsters lurking out there…somewhere…

Monster rainbow trout, that is. Granted not a lot of them, but some legit beasts — most recently, a 27 pounder was pulled from the lake a couple years back and there have been other 20’s, including the 23 pounder caught on a bobber and worm by a young kid a few years prior.

Poor Man’s Glo Bug

by JD on January 27, 2009

While roe will always be the number one bait for steelhead, the Poor Man’s Glo Bug (aka “yarn tie” or “yarnie”) will hold its own in most drift fishing situations.

Really, what’s not to like? They look great underwater and have an almost translucent look to ‘em. Poor Man’s Glo Bugs also hold scent very well and drift in an extremely natural way. PMGBs are super simple and easy to tie — and you can do it right on the river bank. Here’s how:

Start with several 3-4 inch strands of Glo Bug yarn:

Helping salmon get home

by JD on January 26, 2009

There hasn’t been a salmon or steelhead spotted in the upper Auburn Ravine since 1853 but that may soon change. This scenic little stream located just east of Sacramento, drains the western flanks of the Sierra Foothills and eventually makes its way, via irrigation canals, to the Sacramento River.

While the Ravine was probably never a prolific producer of anadramous fish, it certainly had its moments but now the fish are all gone. Of course, the decline can be blamed on all the usual suspects — habitat loss, human encroachment, water diversions and dams.

The latter is a subject that Jack Sanchez of Save Auburn Ravine Salmon & Steelhead (SARSAS) feels strongly about and is working hard to fix.

An all new season!

by JD on January 24, 2009

Well kiddies, it’s that time of year again…time to kick off the 2009 Smoker of the Year Contest!!

Congrats to Salmonzilla for taking the title in 2008 and we look forward to your entries in what promises to be our biggest and best Smoker of the Year Contest yet.

Though all the details have yet to be hashed out, we are in negotiations with several companies that are interested in providing sponsorship for the ‘09 campaign and it looks like we’ll have some sweet prizes this year. So, be sure to send us pics of the darkest, uglies fish you catch this season!

In the meantime, here’s the first 2009 Smoker of the Year entry…

The Big 4-0

by JD on January 23, 2009

On Thursday morning, I decided that it might be a good idea to spend the first few hours of my 40’s on the water…I had this grand vision that nothing would ring my official arrival into “middle age” like a chrome bright steelhead (as a happily married fishing guide, a Ferrari and 23-year-old super model were out of the question).

Of course, if I had really, really wanted to touch a sea-run rainbow on my 40th B-Day, I should have probably headed to a river…any river…besides the American, where the steelie runs are, well, let’s just say a hair south of prolific. But, hey it’s only a mile from the house and has been very kind to me over the years. Plus, I had a day’s worth of lunch and dinner plans and had to be home by about 10 AM.
