Steelie of a Lifetime (Feb. Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

by JD on February 14, 2010

Yep, they grow 'em big in Oregon!

It’s kinda funny how things go. Last week, we showed you a picture of a 21-pound steelie caught by a 16-year-old kid on his first-ever steelhead trip. And now, we have 80-year-young Art Selby, who, along with help from pal Dave Pitts, caught and released this massive 21.25-pound, 38.5-inch wild steelie in Southern Oregon while drifting a yarn ball.

As with the kid’s fish, Art’s is entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest. To enter your big fish into the contest (winner gets a free fishing trip!), head for our online form.

WOW! Nice fish, great handling also to let him go. Ithink I know where that might be, it is amazing what happenes when your DON’T kill the broodstock and release them only to come back to spawn again. They kill brood stock on the Chetco and is why I believe the Chetco is in serious trouble.
They need to release all wild fish.

I know Dave he releases everything especialy like this one. Great fish guys, Good Job , wish more were like you.

That fish was Released! Unfortunately, the big one the kid caught on the Smith was killed…but there’s a new regulation going into effect there next month that bans the killing of wild steelhead (finally!). I’ve always said it should be illegal to kill a wild steelhead anywhere on planet earth…
