April 6, 2008

Our bud and FLW Tour pro, Big Fred Contaoi of Orange County Choppers had a solid showing this week at the second FLW Tour stop of the year. At Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake, where anglers had to switch from sight fishing largemouth on beds to working deeper water for spotts (and back again), Big Fred hung tough and walked away with a check for $2,000.

Big Fred Walk Like an Egyptian

Just a quick update on Bassin’ Big Fred Contaoi…(shown here singing a cover of Jimmy Buffet’s Fins…”Everybody — fins to the left, fins to the right…”)

Our man is off to The Sunshine State for the first Wal-Mart FLW Tour event of the season at Lake Toho Feb. 28- March 2.

The tournament will feature anglers from 35 states, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Australia and Japan and a top prize in the pro division of $125,000.

I’ll, of course, keep you posted on how he does but you can also watch Big Fred weigh in live at:

Big Fred headed for 1st FLW Tour Event of 2008

February 9, 2008

Big Fred and Charlie Evans.JPG
Big Fred Contaoi of the Orange County Choppers Fishing Team (here yukking it up with FLW’s Big Enchilada, Charlie Evans) is headed for Florida’s Lake Toho, where he’ll begin his assault on the FLW Pro Tour’s leaderboard Feb. 28-March 2.

The event is the first FLW Tour stop of his sophomore season and Big Boy’s looking to have a breakout season. At the first Series Event last month at Lake Okeechobee, Freddy stuck to his ‘08 gameplan and very nearly put himself into the money. It was a good, positive start and something to, hopefully, build on the rest of the year.

Of course, I’ll keep you updated on his progress!

Big Fred hanging tough at Okeechobee

January 24, 2008

Two days into the FLW Eastern Series event at Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, Big Fred Contaoi has stayed true to his pre-season gameplan, and weighed in 5 fish on each of the first two days of the tourney. The result is he’s holding his ground and is in a position, with a solid day on Friday, to earn a paycheck.

On the first day, his 5-fish bag weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and then he added another 11 pounds, 8 ounces today for a total of 18-14.

Big Fred’s in Florida at the moment and will start his sophomore season as a FLW touring bass pro at Lake Okeechobee Wednesday.

The FLW Eastern Series event is his first tourney of 2008 and he’s fired up after some good days of practice. He caught this HUGE largemouth a couple days back while prepping for the tournament — bummer he didn’t wait a few days to catch it!

I’m just guessing here, but from what I can tell that fish is at least 12 pounds and probably larger. Big Fred’s something like 6′5″…just to give you some scale.

Of course, I’ll keep ya posted on Big Boy’s progress throughout the season. You can also watch live weigh-ins online at:

Okay all you Big Fred Contaoi fans out there, the big fella (shown here dropping some def rhymes at last year’s Forrest Wood Open) has his new webpage up and running. Here, you can keep up-to-date on his FLW Tour tournament stuff and maybe even learn an interesting tidbit or two that just may surprise you. Our man can teach you how to flip a jig into heavy cover and then, at the end of the day, cook you up a gourmet Soupa Da Pinot for dinner while discussing Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso’s involvement in the Cubist Movement.

Big Fred to kick off 2008 FLW Season at the Big “O”

January 13, 2008

Big Bassin' Fred.JPG

It’s been a short off-season for our favorite FLW Touring bass pro, Big Fred Contaoi of the Orange County Choppers Fishing Team, and the inaugural tournament of the 2008 season is just around the corner.

To kick off his sophomore campaign, Big Boy will return to the scene of the crime — Florida’s Lake Okeechobee — where he began his professional career almost exactly one year ago. The event is slated for Jan. 23-26.

So, just exactly what can we expect from Freddy this season?

“My plans are to fish conservatively and focus on finesse gear,” he says. Rather than trying to bust out the big tackle and hit a home run each time (there is a time and place for that method), his main objective is to put 5 keeper bass in the box each morning and then upgrade from there.

Big Fred gearing up for 2008 FLW Tour season

Fred Contaoi with Big Largemouth bass

The 2008 FLW Professional Bass Tour is set to kick off in February and our man, Big Fred Contaoi of Orange County Choppers, will be there rearing to go.

Big Boy learned a lot during his rookie campaign and heads into his sophomore season with a lot of confidence.

He ended the 2007 season on a high note, with a strong finish at Clear Lake in October, where he landed the biggest fish of the tournament and placed 15th.

His “off-season” has been spent honing his skills and working with sponsors. He also just took part in NASCAR driver Ryan Newman’s Charity Bass Tournament in North Carolina last weekend.

Fred’s new webpage, BigFredFishing will be up soon and will feature all kinds of cool tips, tactics and maybe even a tour journal.

This season, Fred will participate in select FLW Series events across the country in addition to his Tour events.

Be sure to check back here for Big Fred updates throughout the year. I’ll also keep you abreast of his TV schedule for American Chopper and whatever else he finds himself on!
