On Day 1 of the FLW Tour’s stop at the Potomac River on Thursday, Big Fred Contaoi of Orange County Choppers had enough grabs to post a good sack of fish but they just wouldn’t stick.

“I just couldn’t figure out the bite today,” he said Thursday night. “I had my chances…”

He did manage to get three keeper bass that weighed a total of 6 pounds, 9 ounces, which put him in 163rd place. At this point, he’s about 8 pounds out of the money.

We’ll see what today brings…

After posting a good enough sack on day one of the FLW Tour’s Wal-Mart Open at Beaver Lake, AR to keep him in the hunt for a check, Orange County Choppers‘ Big Fred Contaoi had a tough second day.

“It was the first blank of my pro career,” he said. “I didn’t weigh in a fish. I caught a couple shakers but that was it. The fishing just completely changed for me from one day to the next…”

Fresh off earning $10,000 at the FLW Series event at Lake Dardanelle last week, Big Fred Contaoi was right back at it on Thursday at Arkansas’ Beaver Lake at the FLW Tour’s Wal Mart Open.

Not known for big largemouths, it was expected that smallies would play a big role in the tournament and that’s exactly what Fred found out today. He weighed in 3 fish for 5-pounds, 9 ounces and said that his biggest fish of the day was a bronzeback that dwarfed the dinky largemouths he was catching.

For his efforts, Big Boy sits in 112th place after Day 1. Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, S.C., took the early lead in the event with five largemouths weighing 13 pounds, 11 ounces, so Fred’s got some work to do on Friday.

$10,000 — that’s what you get for hanging tough, staying focused and believing in yourself, which is exactly what our man on the bass scene, Big Fred Contaoi of the Orange County Choppers fishing team did this week at the Wal-Mart FLW Series tournament at Lake Dardanelle in Arkansas.

The tourney started off a bit rough and Big Boy only weighed in 2 bass for a total of 5-pounds, 9 ounces…which included an 8-ounce penalty for a dead fish. At the end of the day, he was sitting in 165th place.

Fresh off his near-miss at Lake Norman in South Carolina last week, Big Fred’s back at it May 9-12 at the Wal-Mart FLW Series event at Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, AR.

Our man’s on the hunt for the $125,000 first prize and after pre-fishing, says that fishing may be tough this week.

“It’s been raining like crazy upstream of here and the lake’s pretty stained,” he said. “There’s one area where the water’s clean and that’s where are the boats are — and the fish are getting pounded.”

Big Boy’s working up a game plan and says that there are some much larger fish to be caught at Dardanelle than there were in Lake Norman.

As always, we’ll keep ya up to date on our favorite basser’s doings.

The day before the tourney...

They say that luck is where preparation meets opportunity and that was the theme…sorta…on Thursday and Friday when our man, Big Fred Contaoi, hit the water at the FLW Wal-Mart pro tour stop at Lake Norman in Charlotte, NC.

Big Boy was well-prepared for the event and had and very good game plan. Since the bass in Norman run on the small side, a 5-fish sack each day weighing in the neighborhood of 10-12 pounds was what experts figured would keep a guy in the hunt.

Fred went out and posted 10-pounds, 2 ounces on day one, which put him in very good position going into Day 2. At that point, he was only 4 pounds out of the lead and about a pound out of the money.

Fred's Spott

In case you’ve been wondering what’s up with Big Fred Contaoi these days, our Bassmesiter is currently in Charlotte, N.C. preparing for the next FLW Tour stop at Lake Norman, which will take place April 26-29. Like all the FLW Wal-Mart events, there’s a big purse at Norman…how big? How about $200,000 for first place!

Lake Norman is a shallow, good-sized body of water that’s full of largemouth and spotts. The bass here don’t get all that large, so it’s probably going to take “only” a 12- to 15-pound sack each day to stay in contention.

Fred’s feeling good about things at Norman and has put together a new game plan that should help him climb the ranks.

As always, we’ll keep you posted…

Big Fred made a much better showing on Day 2 of the $125,000 FLW Wal-Mart Tour stop at Tennessee’s Fort Loudoun-Tellico Lakes. He weighed in 4 fish for over 7 pounds, but, unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to allow him to fish into the weekend.

“Just like yesterday, I lost some good fish today,” he said after the weigh-in.

Big Fred finished up with a 2-day total of 9 pounds and change, which earned him a 152nd place finish. While he’s yet to make a check, Fred’s been improving with each tournament and we’ll bet he’s in the money soon!

Bass didn’t stay pinned for Big Fred on Day 1 of FLW Tour Stop at Fort Loudoun-Tellico Lakes

After a successful day of filming with the TLC and American Chopper gang yesterday, our budding bass star, Big Fred Contaoi had a tough time keeping the bass hooked on Thursday’s opening round of the FLW Wal-Mart Tour’s stop at Tennessee’s Fort Loudoun-Tellico Lakes.

“I caught a ton of fish today but they were all dinks,” said Fred. “I had some good ones on but I just couldn’t keep ‘em hooked for some reason. It was a rough day…”

Currently in 188th place, Big Boy has a lot of ground to make up and will have to post a pretty good sack to make the cut on Friday, but we’ve got faith in him.

We wish him the best and we’ll keep you posted on his progress.
