White sea bass are called the “ghost fish” in central and northern California, so therefore Larry Roland must be the “Ghost Buster” with this bad ass brace of WSBs from Monterey Bay. These brutes ate candybait and weighed 30 plus pounds.
In addition to having some extra fine eating on his hands, Big Lar is entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest and has a chance at winning a free fishing trip with the FishwithJD gang…though it looks like we just might learn a thing or two from him if he wins!

Sturgie, you make my heart flutter!
Okay, so maybe Jeremiah Wattenburger didn’t really get down on his knees and propose to this sturgeon, but he was genuinely stoked when he pulled this 72 incher (his first ever!) from the Cache Slough area of the California Delta. The pair shared a tender moment before J.W. turned the object of his affection loose. You know what they say: If you love something, set it free…
His fishing buddy eloquently described the scene: “Jer’s 6′2″ 230 lbs…you have to know the size of his big-ass, bald head to understand how big the fish is!” Nicely put! [click to continue…]
Yep, we figured that was a tough fish to beat!
It was a close battle between two epic 20 plus pound steelhead, but in the end, Dave Pitts and his buddy with the Giant Oregon Steelie took the popular vote and will now be entered into the Hawg of the Year finals in December.
Here’s a look at the final results…

Hooked this one right before my fingers froze!
Somewhere underneath all the Eskimo garb is Anstey Hinkson, who caught this dandy slab o’ steel on his third cast of the day on Michigan’s Muskegon River and then nada…zip…zilch…for the next 7 freezing hours. He and pops rallied in the bottom of the ninth, however, and hooked 4 more in the last hour of the trip…which is just the way we guides like it to go down. Send ‘em home on a high note!
Hinkson’s fish is entered into the March edition of our
Hawg of the Month Contest, and will go head-to-head with all of our other entries for this month. Of course, the “Hawg Bowl” will be held in December in which all of the monthly winners will do battle for Hawg of the Year honors…and a free fishing trip! If you’ve got a fish that can make the grade, submit it

Young gun Jake Martinson headed for River X on the Olympic Peninsula in mid February for a little suntan and steelie combo action. This big, chrome hen was caught drifting bait and was released after a quick grip and grin. Even for a young buck, Jake knows better than most that big girls like this are much more valuable in the water than on the ‘que.
At the end of the month, you’ll get a chance to vote for Jake in the February Hawg of the Month contest. If you’ve got a photo of a big fish, enter the contest.

Guess I don't need to hit the gym today...
Jon Smith had his hands full (literally) with these two mid-30’s kings that gobbled up sardine-wrapped Kwikfish on back-to-back passes on the Smith River on Dec. 29. Jon was fishing with his girlfriend’s dad, Jim Mitchell, who was at the helm. Hmmm, your honey’s dad is a fishing guide? Sounds like’s she’s a keeper, dude!
For his efforts, Jon’s entered into our Hawg of the Month contest. If you’d like a shot at winning a free fishing trip at the end of the year, send us your big fish pix!

Yep, they grow 'em big in Oregon!
It’s kinda funny how things go. Last week, we showed you a picture of a
21-pound steelie caught by a 16-year-old kid on his first-ever steelhead trip. And now, we have 80-year-young Art Selby, who, along with help from pal Dave Pitts, caught and released this massive 21.25-pound, 38.5-inch wild steelie in Southern Oregon while drifting a yarn ball.
As with the kid’s fish, Art’s is entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest. To enter your big fish into the contest (winner gets a free fishing trip!), head for our

I hope I remember this when I wake up!
Super Sunday was good to loyal
FishWithJD fan, Greg McElroy, who caught & released this nice 54-inch Delta sturgeon on shrimp while fishing the Super Bowl Sturgeon Derby. In the event, his team got close enough to the target length to finish 3rd…for their efforts, they walked away with $1,500.
Now, he’s going for the double dip and trying to win Feburary Hawg of the Month honors. If you’ve caught a whopper and would like a chance at winning a free fishing trip, submit your catch and info on our
online form.
