Fire up the barby....yea baby!
Have you ever noticed that most guys who feel the need to throw “Captain” in front of their names are total gomers who probably have never even piloted anything larger than a mini van? Well, that’s definitely not the case with Capt. Mike Baxter of Santa Cruz…he’s actually pulled a trailer with a mini van! (Kidding of course…). No, Capt. Mike is one of the most highly regarded charter skippers along the California coast with something like a trillion and a half hours of sea time at the helm of big party boats.
While his hopping insurance business keeps Cap’n Mike off the water a lot more these days, he still gets out to play as often as possible. Here he is with a 50-pound white sea bass he caught Saturday, 8/21 off Monterey while flylining a live squid on his brother’s boat,
Wild Natalie.
In addition to some serious barbecue fodder, the ol’ skipper is also entered into our
Hawg of the Month Contest in which he’ll have a chance to battle it out with other Hawgs for a free fishing trip. And if you ever happen to be in Santa Cruz on a Thursday evening between 7-8 PM, be sure to check him on the
Let’s Go Fishing Radio Show on AM 1080.

He’s normally guiding deer hunts on a private ranch in the Bay Area (yes, you heard that right), but Josh Peixoto of JP Guide Service also likes to put a bend in the ol’ rod from time to time. On Saturday, he caught this nice king salmon on a backtrolled Kwikfish while fishing with me on the Feather River.
As if just catching a king in California this year wasn’t reward enough, Josh is also entered into our August Hawg of the Month Contest in which he’ll battle it out with other anglers for a shot at a free fishing trip. Learn more about the contest HERE.
Fire up the grill!
Walt Compomizzo fished off (flat-ass-calm-looking) Bodega Bay, CA for this nice king while trolling a flasher/hootchie combo. For his efforts, Walt not only gets some killer grill fodder but also a chance to win a fishing trip with us.

Here’s reason to think twice about letting your kids swim in the river this summer! This giant 40-pound striped bass was landed by Mike (“The Headless Angler”) Woodman while fishing with me last month on the American River in Northern California. After a quick photo, the old greybeard striper was released. We hooked the fish on a kid on a boogie board….Kidding of course! A live minnow did the trick.
For his efforts, Woodman (or at least his torso) is entered into our July Hawg of the Month Contest. If you’ve got a big fish from a recent trip, send us the photo…you’ll have a chance at winning a free fishing trip. Details HERE
Chis is a winner again!
Chis Watanabe is on fire! His big Sierra brown trout buried the competition (see results below) in the June
Hawg of the Month Contest and, in so doing, he becomes the first-ever two-time monthly winner in the same season. What’s really amazing is he’s doing it with trout…Check out
jumbo cutthroat that took top honors in January.

Happy Father's Day to me!
Mother Ocean gave Darin DeLuca a sweet 26-pound gift of succulent halibut fillets for Father’s Day. He caught the fish near Capitola, CA in the New Brighton kelp beds while drifting a live sardine. How the heck DeLuca got that fish aboard with his little butterfly net is another story…
In addition to some seriously good dinners coming up, DeLuca is entered into our June Hawg of the Month Contest and earns a chance to win a free fishing trip at the end of the year. Think you’ve got game? Enter your fish
