Why Bugs Hate Bass Boats…

New Ewok village under construction??
April 9, 2008

Okay, so it may look like the home of those fuzzy little guys in Return of the Jedi, but this is actually the new bridge being built over the South Fork of the Eel River at Confusion Hill in Humboldt County, CA.

Amen!

I saw this one down by the river a while back. Kinda says it all, doesn’t it?
Not exactly Margaritaville…
February 27, 2008

While you’ll never mistake Idaho’s Lake MacKay for Key West in the dead of winter, the locals do know how to have fun. Apparently, there’s a great kokanee jig bite under the 30 inches of ice…
Is it really just kokanee fishing going on? My guess is there’s all sorts of debauchery taking place in those ice shacks, but kokanee guide Rick Kennedy, who snapped the photo, declined to comment and suggested that if I pursued my line of questioning, his lawyers would soon be in touch…
Fishing, Istanbul style
February 25, 2008

Apparently, they fish with a little more style in Turkey…check out this dude fishing the Istanbul waterfront in a suit. My mom snapped this pic on a recent trip and I thought it was cool — kinda reminds me of some of the classy fellows that often fish the Feather River’s Thermalito Afterbay Outlet Hole!!
Enchanted River Steelheading!
February 22, 2008

I’m headed back north in April to my favorite steelhead stream on the planet, B.C.’s “Enchanted River,” where magical stuff happens…here’s Rancid getting a little dose of enchantment on our last mission…
I can’t wait!
The Natural
February 21, 2008

I took my 20-month-old kid down to the river the other day for his first-ever fishing lesson (we bypassed bluegill and went straight to steelhead — got to start ‘em out right, ya know?). While he seemed pretty fired up about it all, it was dad who will never forget the moment. Seeing a little bundle of your genetic material holding a rod in his hands for the first time is…wow…hard to describe.
Trout Heads!
February 19, 2008
For no particular reason, other than they’re kinda cool to look at from this angle, I present to you my newest art collection: Trout Heads! (Look for it on tour this summer at a gallery near you)

Fishing the Edge of the World
February 13, 2008
Okay, so we weren’t drifting anywhere exotic the other morning, but fog on the American River made it seem kinda mysterious and interesting…
Giant Steelhead?
February 9, 2008

It is said that anglers are all liars and everything that comes out of our mouths is subject to further inquiry. While that may or may not be true, I can tell you that those of us gifted in the ancient art of trick photography, however, often can escape said scrutiny by producing visual evidence to support our seemingly outlandish claims.
Take this enormous steelhead in the above photo, for example. A little close up from a low angle makes the thing look like it’s a monster…when in reality, it was about a 10 pounder. And I didn’t even have to bust out the Photoshop on it.
But don’t worry…you can count on me to tell you the straight skinny. As long as I have pictures to back it up…
