Name that Fish! April Fool’s Edition
April 1, 2008

Okay, you guys are going to have to step it up a bit if you want to take this week’s Name that Fish contest and win a pack of DOA Lures jerk shad.
This one is a two-parter that originally appeared in an April Fool’s gag I did for a major fishing magazine a while back….

Okay, I’m lobbing you a big, fat slow softball with this one. In fact, I’m not even going to give any of the usual hints.
What is this guy??
Name that Fish!

I’m more chrome than a salmon and fight twice as hard as one of the same size.
I like warm water south of the border and eat, well, anything that tries to run from me.
I enjoy near-shore areas — especially sandy bottoms that have some nice rocks and weed beds.
I’m not afraid to eat stuff off the surface and, if you ever fish for me, don’t be surprised it I come up and take your lure right off the top!
Can you name me??

Okay, it’s time for another round of Name that Fish, the contest in which you can win, uh, well, nothing.
But it’s still fun to play anyway, right?? Anybody? Hello? Is thing thing on?? Test. Test. Test. Can you hear me?
So, anyway, this little fella likes warm near-shore waters of the Pacific and Sea of Cortez. He hangs out near rocks and kelp and dines on crabs, shrimp, mussels and small fish…and 2-ounce spoons!
Hint: he’s not a….
Barred surf perch, cabrilla, calico bass, Pacific barracuda, copper rockfish, Mexican Goatfish or Atlantic salmon.
Any guesses??

Okay everybody…you know what time it is??
(Que the music)
Yep, it’s time for another exciting, mind-bending (okay, maybe just totally useless) edition of…
Name that Fish!
As usual, this week’s contest is sponsored by absolutely nobody, so we’re a little short on prizes. Really short, actually.
So, this time around, it’s totally for the love of the game (again).
To get you started, a few hints are in order. This fish is not a…
Bass-a-gill
Bluebass
Member of the billfish family
Brook Trout
Mirror Carp

I’m letting you off easy on this one, the latest Name that Fish entry.
You probably shouldn’t need a clue, but here’s one anyway: This guy reaches sexual maturity at 2 years of age and, in many areas, spawning runs occur every other year.

Okay all you Name that Fish junkies, see if you can get this one:
He’s a bottom-loving inhabitant of cold northern Pacific waters (Monterey to Alaska) and is quite fond of crabs, shrimp and smaller fish…for dining purposes, that is.
I cannot, however, comment on his social life.
This dude will hang out in near-shore waters and can be found all the way out to several hundred feet.
Oh yea, by the way, that’s a 16-ounce Godzilla Jig in its mouth, just so you have a reference point.
Any guesses?
Who am I??

Here’s the latest in our Name that Fish game…this cute little fella typically runs 6 to 18 inches and inhabits near-coastal rockpiles and kelp beds from Central California to Alaska. He loves small fish, crabs and shrimp and is often caught by anglers with squid, mussels and jigs…though mostly incidentally.
Here’s another big hint….
