Name that Fish: A head with fins
July 27, 2007
Okay all you Name that Fish junkies, see if you can get this one:
He’s a bottom-loving inhabitant of cold northern Pacific waters (Monterey to Alaska) and is quite fond of crabs, shrimp and smaller fish…for dining purposes, that is.
I cannot, however, comment on his social life.
This dude will hang out in near-shore waters and can be found all the way out to several hundred feet.
Oh yea, by the way, that’s a 16-ounce Godzilla Jig in its mouth, just so you have a reference point.
Any guesses?
Who am I??

Here’s the latest in our Name that Fish game…this cute little fella typically runs 6 to 18 inches and inhabits near-coastal rockpiles and kelp beds from Central California to Alaska. He loves small fish, crabs and shrimp and is often caught by anglers with squid, mussels and jigs…though mostly incidentally.
Here’s another big hint….
A trout? Did you just call me a trout?

Time for another installment of Name that Fish! This is an easy one…
This handsome fella, who is not a trout, spends part of the year in Northwestern saltwater and then heads for rivermouths in the spring to munch on out-migrating salmon smolt. He and his kind then typically follow spawning salmon upriver to munch on eggs and then (yuck) rotting carcasses.
It’s a busy life — do a little eating here, a little eating there. Migrate back and forth between fresh and saltwater and, oh yea, mix a little fishy fornication in there as well.

Okay, here’s a Name that Fish contest entry that I don’t even know the answer to. I caught this odd, blue-eyed fella near the bottom in Icy Strait, Alaska last summer while mooching a herring for silvers and don’t have a clue what it is.

What’s that? You say all the previous Name that Fish entries were a piece of crab cake? Try this one on for size…(you get extra points if you’ve actually caught one).

Okay, kids, it’s time for another round of (insert cheesy game show music here) Name that Fish!
This bad boy has a mouth full of nasty, needle-point teeth and kinda looks like the vermin offspring of a trout crossed with a lingcod. They’d be super creepy but they only get to about 1 foot in length.
Here’s a quick hint: it lives in the warm near-shore waters of Hawaii and the locals call ‘em ‘Ulae.

Okay kiddies, here’s our first installment in a little game we like to call “Name that Fish,” in which you can, by correctly identifying the fish pictured above, win…well…nothing. The lack of prize money and vacation packages aside, it’s still fun (honest). Read on to see if you know what this guy is…
This week’s mystery fish is one that a guide buddy of mine calls the “Brown Turd.”
