Leopard Shark

SHARKS!
We did our first light tackle shark fishing trip of the year on Saturday and the bite was pretty much like usual: steady to wide open all day long. And like normal, we gave up long before the fish did.

We never went more than about 10 minutes without a fish on the entire outing and had a few doubles as well.

With chunk bait in 3-7 feet of water, the sharkin’ was extremely good, and in that shallow water, most of the fish jumped when hooked…very cool!

We’ve also been experiencing some excellent steelie fishing on the American, so read on…

American Steelie

American River Steelhead
We still have some winter-run steelhead around though this is typically when we see their numbers drop off. The good news is, however, the spring “football” steelhead generally start making a good showing at the beginning of March!

Well, we finally got some rain here in the Sacramento Valley last weekend and that put some color into some of our local waters…which was a good news/bad news type of situation as it brought some fresh steelhead into the American and Feather rivers but it also muddied up a white-hot striper bite.

Feather River rainbow

Feather River

After a slow start to the week on the ol’ Rio Americano on Monday, I jumped over the Feather and fished some steelhead in both the high and low flow areas. We had one dreadfully slow day over there in which we only caught 1 fish, but the other missions were successful from a numbers standpoint.

Except for the 1-fish day, we hooked no fewer than 5 steelhead per outing on plugs and side-drifted roe.

Happy New Year, everyone!

American River
The top end of the American River opened today to fishing and the steelheading was fair at best for most. The family and I always do NEW YEARS in Palm Springs, so I wasn’t on the water. However, I talked with some of my guide pals and local river rats and they all said it was tough. Guide Rick Soto was the shining star with3 adults landed but most boats either blanked or got 1.

Don’t worry….it WILL get better as the month rolls along!

JD-striper

Well, I’m still banging away at the stripers in the Delta, but things have gotten tougher here on the Sacramento side because of the weather. We’ve been having stretches of very cold days, storms and then cold again and it’s starting to spread the fish out.

I’ll be off for the holidays and will report back in early January.

Wishing you and yours all the best this holiday season and in the new year!

BC With Striper

The striper bite in the Delta has been wide open and we’re seeing 30, 40 or even 50-fish days right now throwing Mad River Outfitters swimbaits on the Sacramento side.

Most of the fish have been running a solid 4-7 pounds and we’re not catching very many shakers. In the mix have also been some nice 10-13 pounders.

With the weather nice, this should keep on rolling…
