Washington State’s Cowlitz River may be famously known for its summer and winter steelies, but it’s also a darn good salmon stream. In fact, there’s a good clip of kings in the river at the moment and fishing looks like it’s going to hold up for several weeks to come.
Guide Jeremy Warter of Kick Ass Fishing has been putting a hurtin’ on some big kings lately…take Friday for example, when he got two 32 pounders, a 25 pounder and a 15.
Big Jer with a nice king!
“The king should go through the second week of October,” says Warter. “And, of course, we’re expected to get a huge number of coho this year, too — something like 100,000!”

Okay, so our first few days on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula didn’t exactly pan out from a steelheading standpoint. Cold rain, sleet, poor fish returns and rising water all conspired against us. But Days 1-3 paled in comparison to what awaited us on our final day…
Mike B. called it the “wost conditions” he’d ever endured on a river. I put it right up there behind the famed “Hunt for Mr. Hogito” day on Oregon’s Elk River many moons ago. Big Worm said…well…he didn’t say a thing but it’s safe to say he’d rather been somewhere else…say in a hot tub with a couple French bikini models, for example.

I was once asked by someone why I fished for steelhead…“So I can see ‘em up close” was the first thing that came to mind. In case you don’t understand that one, here’s a little visual propaganda to set you straight. I don’t care if it’s a 6-pound hatchery hen or a 30-pound wild BC buck, steelhead are the coolest damn fish you’ll ever encounter…

It’s been a while since we’ve had any positive news on the salmon front, but a study recently released by Oregon State University may point to better times ahead.

Here’s yet another 20-pound steelhead taken this week… by yet another couple guys I used to guide with in Alaska (if you’ll recall, we had a picture of a 20 pounder taken on the Olympic Peninsula a few days back that was hooked by a guy from that same lodge).
