The epic, “dream season” that was the Smith River’s fall Chinook run seems to have rolled straight into what looks to be an awesome year of winter steelie fishing! The Team FishwithJD boys headed north earlier in the week with guides John Klar of John’s Guide Service and Mike Stratman of Redwood Coast Fishingto see firsthand how steelhead season on the Smith is shaping up. A selfless act of recon, with you, the reader in mind, you might say…

I dont like the rig you use a duble hook set up is kinda like snagging, nice eh.
If your the best go back to single hooks the it puts skill back on angler, vs a snag set up like you use. we all know that fish will come up to bait with mouthes opening and closing so its only natural that the lowwer hook will catch fish most of the time .

First of all, I never said I was “the best,” — you did, so thanks. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, tell me how you can snag fish when plunking, which is what that rig in the video was for. In case you’ve never heard of plunking, you’re sitting in an anchored drift boat with the rig downstream of you and the rod in the holder. If that makes me a snagger, guilty as charged I guess…

jd your awesome, and so is the vid… and why would someone say that you were trying to snag?!! wat a retard. its called plunking, very good method. and if i were trying to snag i would use a F##*IN trebble hook and go at it. not a double hook setup?
JD says
Thanks Woody…yea, funny. Plunking would definitely not be my preferred snagging method!

Just want to know where and when if at all if there is going to be a Salmon season in North California this year
JD says
Nobody knows yet. Maybe on the Klamath-Trinity system and most likely on the Smith. They may also do a mini season on the Sac again in Nov-Dec. Other than that, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Hope I’m wrong, of course!

Glad that you got to fish with a couple of steelhead machines. Both those guys are a couple of animals when it comes to green water and metalheads.
Congrats on the great trip.
