We were at the Folks’ house in the Sierra Foothills on Super Bowl Sunday — the very spot where my bro & I grew up. With a year-round trout stream in the yard, you can imagine what I spent most of my youth doing!
Besides rainbow trout, the creek had the occasional brownie, plus all sorts of other critters. Over the years I caught green sunfish, bluegill, suckers, squawfish, largemouth bass and even a couple golden shiners in there.
But we also had tons of fun snorkeling the creek, building dams and launching (and then sinking) model ships with BB guns. We ran the thing at high water in very unseaworthy craft — and I even tried to jump it on my BMX bike in 7th grade!
In the High School years, I caught trout to about 16 inches in the creek. Sadly, those fish seem to be gone and now when I take my kid to fish it, most of the trout seem to be about 10 inches or less. Since the glory days, there’s been plenty of habitat degradation upstream and more water’s diverted now than in my heyday.
