Made of a high tech aerospace composite material, the modular design of the props is brilliant. These props can take a serious beating and not break.
If you do hit something, you’ll get some dings and scratches but the blade won’t bend…meaning your prop balance will stay intact.
And in the most dramatic of bottom strikes, the blades are designed to sheer at about the same time aluminum would so that you don’t end up damaging your lower unit.
If you do blow up a blade, you can quickly remove it and replace it with a fresh one in under 5 minutes — thus saving your day! The blades slide in and out of the hub easily…
When I did this to my kicker prop in the middle of salmon season, I couldn’t backtroll for a week until a new prop got shipped to me…
With a Piranha Prop, I probably would have just kept on fishing. And even had I sheared a blade, I could have been back in business in a matter of minutes…not days!
I’m absolutely buying one of these for my kicker. They’re only around 90 bucks, which is about half the cost of a regular aluminum prop (I’ve probably spent $1500 for kicker props over the years). And replacement blades for a 9.9 are about $17.
There’s also a lifetime warranty on the hub, so if you somehow break it, they will replace it.
Piranha Props are made in the USA (Jackson, CA) and are available from 9.9 to 280 HP for most outboard and I/O manufacturers.
They also come in several pitches so you can get the performance you want. They’ll also ship you out loaner blades of different pitches so you can find the one that works best.
If you fish high elevation lakes, you can buy different pitched blades so that you don’t lose speed — and then easily switch back when you come back down to the flat lands! Very cool!
