Move over Bell Island, Alaska, there’s a new home (if all the paper work goes through) of the all-tackle world record rainbow trout: Lake Diefenbaker.
Lake Diefen…what? I know, it’s not exactly a household name — until now — but the lake in Saskatchewan has a reputation for pumping out incredible rainbows like this pending world record caught by Adam Konrad, 26, of Saskatoon.
According to the fine folks at trophytroutguide.com, the mammoth beast weighed 43.6 pounds and was 38.75 inches long with an incredible girth of 34 inches.
The king of ‘bows took 20 minutes to subdue after munching an orange Mepps Cyclops spoon that Konrad was chucking from the bank. Dude’s no stranger to trophy trout, either. In fact, just before the record fish hit, he’d beached an 18 pounder and he’s also the proud owner of the 12-pound line class record — a 33-pound, 6-ounce rainbow he caught earlier in the year.
Awaiting IGFA approval
The paperwork has been submitted to the International Game Fish Association and, if everything checks out, Konrad’s fish will be recognized as the largest rainbow trout ever taken on rod and reel, eclipsing the old standard of 42-2, taken back in 1970 in saltwater off Bell Island, AK. That fish, of course, was a steelhead. The pending new record is a triploid.
