Jake “The Giant” Martinson is a cool kid I used to work with in Alaska who’s turned into quite the steelhead angler. Here’s a photo of a 20-pounder he caught and released last weekend near Forks, WA on the Olympic Peninsula.
I’ll step aside here and let the kid tell how it all went down…
“Fishin’ was slow, but the fish were quality. We missed a fish or two but I eventually tied into a toad buck in a boulder garden. It was an epic battle, one I will never forget. My friend Bret maxed himself out to get back up to an eddy so that we could free the line that was hung on the corner of a large rock, all the while the fish was tearin’ upstream. He ran us all over the place, after giving chase upstream we had to follow him down. Everything really had to work out perfectly for us to get him in the bag, which Brad did perfectly. He taped out at an honest 39″x20″, my first true 20.”
Nice work, Jake!

J.D.:
Could we publish that photo of the young man with the 20-pound steelhead in the Peninsula Daiy News?
If so, could you send the photo to me as a JPEG?
Also, what river did he catch the fish in? What was he using (bobber?) This was a native fish? And where does Jake live?
Many thanks, JOHN BREWER, Peninsula Daily News
