Lake Tahoe big fish guru Mike Nielsen of Tahoe Topliners has struck again! Just a little over a year ago, Mike guided an angler to the lake record brown trout and now he checks in with a jumbo mack just ounces shy of 30 pounds.
The best part of this story (besides the fact that he released the fish) is how it was caught. We’ll let Mike tell the story…
“This fish was caught on a 12-inch purple and black Castaic hard head. I had two takes on it a few days prior but the size of the lure allows the fish to throw it around and out. I spooled some 17lb. on and sharpened the hooks and on Sundays we go swimming with friends and we on our way about 1:45pm when my little one went to sleep and my friends were late so we threw it out and 30 min later I got bit. It took 20 min to land and 2 boats of friends and another angler pulled up to watch. My wife did great handling the boat and I put maximum pressure on it to not let it shake the hooks. We photoed, video and released it. The big mack was taken 155ft down over 200 ft just north of Emerald Bay.”

congratulations Mike …. beautiful fish…………… that fish had Mike’s name written all over it, hell if anyone could land that baby Mike was the man.
My son Frank Jr. and I went fishing with Mike just last month and when most boats were returning to dockside with only a few fish Mike brought us back with limits of Macks and a few rainbows tossed in for good measure…. I know the spot where that fish was caught cuz Mike took us fishing there and pointed out where his family like to swim and picnic …. Most guides would keep that a secret, ….lol Thanks Mike,
Frank Jr. and I hope to fish with you again real soon. ….. Frank Sr.
