The kid’s first-ever steelie!

November 15, 2010 By JD 10 Comments

Took Coop down to the ol’ backyard late yesterday evening for a quick plug pulling session and he managed to go 2 for 2 on small steelies, the first two of his young steelheading career. Not the biggest fish in terms of weight, but so huge in other ways!

I knew there were decent numbers of these little “egg-eater” size fish around and I figured they’d be the perfect size for a 4-year-old. Though the little fish were pretty scrappy on kokanee rods, the little dude was able to crank ’em in all by himself. He was stoked! But not nearly as much as dad…

We were only out for an hour and the problem now is convincing him you don’t catch a couple steelies every time out!

I remeber my oldest boy’ first Chromer, it was at upper sunrise, a nice 6-7 pound hen. Since she hadn’t spawned yet, I wanted him to think about releasing her. I put my 2 cents worth in his ear and backed off. After about two or three minutes of a death grip on her tail, his hand opened up and away she swam. I was a super proud Dad, I gave him two big thumbs up and a hug.

Awesome. You are creating a monster. But I’ll bet you already knew that.

Like the song says, Your a lucky man, able to enjoy another day of being your little man’s dad!About the problem… It’ll go away after a few slow days of fishing.. :-)
When my son Andrew was a little tyke, it took him a couple of years to figure out when the morning was better spent sleeping in the tray under the bow of my old driftboat, saying “wake me up when they start biting, dad.”
Cherish those times JD Dad! Memories bring a smile to my face! Thanks Bro! CB

NICE! I’ve put about 100 hours or more in trying to hook some steel this year over the spring and summer and still haven’t touched one :( He’ll be hooked for life now and will be asking for G.Loomis, St. Croix and Lamiglas gear for christmans from now on. It’s good to see them start so young!
