California’s Shanghai Falls: Before & After

May 23, 2012 By JD 8 Comments

Here's the Falls before they collapsed....

Famous Shanghai Falls on California’s Feather river inexplicably collapsed sometime last winter (read the story here) but I hadn’t had a chance to check out the change until this week. Man, what a difference…instead of a horseshoe falls, it’s a chute. Check out the pix…

And now....here's the horseshoe, looking from nearly the exact same spot, high and dry

Before....

After...

Shanghai Falls as they look now

The falls began to collapse when I lost power with the 16′ Almar. It started with my motor stalling out as we raced up the falls. The boat had stalled, suddenly turning a 180, nose first down river, but something had stopped us from traveling down river. A long strand of solid copper wire had wrapped around the motor, which held us in place, in extremely shallow water. Sand was washing around the boat, as we sawed through the wire. The boat was about one more splash away from being filled with water until the bottom gave way and flushed us down river!

Things have changed due to the collapse, the current and the bite. The shad bite lasts for only a few hours before the sun goes up. So if you plan on heading out, try to come as early as you can. Good luck!

End of Arden Way on the American was a Chute on the Goethe park side that we called the rapidis. This was way before the bridge. The deep hole on the Arden side was the Lagoon. Good Bass fishing. One Winter it changed. This is your Geezer update

Man, I really need to talk a walk down there and check it out. It’s hard to believe that it’s changed that much. Wow.
