New Lake Tahoe record brown trout!

Friend and veteran lake Tahoe charter skipper Mike Nielsen of Tahoe Topliners Guide Service holds a new Lake Tahoe record for brown trout that client Don Nanounouchi of San Jose, CA caught with him on Friday, June 20. The beast weighed 15 pounds, 2 ounces.

The previous mark was held by a 14-pound, 3-ounce fish caught in 2006 by an angler Nielsen is very familiar with — himself.

“It took 65 straight days of fishing hard for browns before we caught this one,” said Nielsen. “The luck finally swung my direction. We lost many big fish before finally landing this one. These big browns can be tough to catch in water as clear as Lake Tahoe.”

The big fish munched a trolled gold and black F40 Rebel Minnow well coated with Pautzke Liquid Krill fished on 12-pound Silver Thread fluorocarbon.Nevada Record brown Trout (large size).jpg

“I’ll tell you the Rebel Minnows have been nailing the browns this year, both big and small, but I’ve seen my catch rates go way up by using the Liquid Krill that Pautzke makes,” says Nielsen. “That krill scent is the bomb and has made a huge difference in the last few years for me.

“It was special because we actually got this one in. I’ve lost several browns in the past that we knew were this big,” explains Nielsen. “We spotted the fish rolling in open water on the surface chasing a small trout or kokanee and we ended up catching it 15 feet down in 200 feet of water.”
