Several still missing after charter boat accident in Mexico

July 6, 2011 By JD 3 Comments

The ERIK capsized over the July 4th Weekend in the Sea of Cortez and several people are still missing.

Mexican and U.S. search teams continue looking for “between five and seven people” missing in the capsizing of the charter fishing boat Erik over the weekend in the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Gov. Jose Guadalupe Osuna said.

A total of 35 people – 18 tourists and 17 crew members – have been rescued since the shipwreck off San Luis, an island in Baja California, which is in northwestern Mexico.

One person, Leslie Lee, died in the shipwreck, the governor said, without releasing the victim’s nationality.

This incident SHOULD NOT have happen at all for several valid reasons:

    1) The captain didn’t follow instruction from the Mexican police. The Captain sail out away when he knew that a big storm is coming!
    2) IF there were a person steering the ship at around 2:30Am the ship, he could have TURNED into the wave or INSTEAD of the ship in horizon position which allow the it capsized. Having the ship sailing against the wave would provide a greater change of survival.
    3) IF there were a person steering, then that person could have SOUND THE ALARM or BELL prior to the wave coming!
    4) IF there were a person steering, a MAYDAY call should have been in pursuit!
    5) NO SAFETY RULES was brief to the passengers prior to sailing. This is a Maritime LAW procedure and practice!
    6) The Captain of the Erik is a DUMP STUPID FUCKING IDIOT. He should be jail for MURDER!

The bottom line – my brother Don Lee should have been alive today! ( one of the 7 missing at sea)

    Read this this morning………………….. DIRTBAGS!

As the returning survivors told it, the crew of the Erik grabbed the best life vests on board and didn’t wake passengers or help them evacuate.

Hanson and Zuger said there might be more of them alive to talk about it if the crew hadn’t been so focused on their self-preservation. . Hanson still remembers shouting to the captain as the vessel sank.

“‘Did you call the coast guard?!’ He didn’t say anything,” recalled Hanson. “[He] just stared at me. I said ‘Did you call the coast guard?!'”

I just heard an unconfirmed report that the captain of the vessel was arrested. The report said he was ordered not to leave dock that night due to the coming storm but he set off anyway!
