Almost 70 pounds of lake trout!

October 2, 2007 By JD 5 Comments

69-pound lake trout

Marlin Coulombe of Sacramento, CA caught the largest lake trout (mackinaw) of 2007 on August 2. The Fiat-sized beast measured 51 inches long, had a 33-inch girth and weighed a whopping 69.4 pounds. The fish was taken from Great Bear Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

The fish ate a special 16-inch AC Plug built by Allen Cole that Coulombe had his taxidermist custom paint to look like a grayling…the laker’s favorite food. The fish was hooked while trolling with guide Robin Stewart of Trophy Lodge in 40 to 50 feet of water.

The best part of the story, however, is…

Small Creek Troutin’

Small Creek brown trout fishing

Sometimes, you’ve just gotta leave the boat, the expensive graphite rods and 27 tackle boxes at home and head for a tiny creek for some trout fishing. There’s just something so pure and basic about it. I don’t care if most of the trout are 9 inches long — it’s still a blast and, if I happen to catch a 12 incher, I’m as fired up about it as I would be a 12-pound steelhead.

Of course, summer’s the time to head out and try a little small stream fishing or “crik hoppin,” as we used to call it when we were kids. To get you all primed up for a season of light tackle fun, here are some basic tips.

Let’s start with the four main lure styles you’ll need to be successful.

The epic tail…er…tale of Steelie Dan

February 16, 2007 By JD 4 Comments

Aiming for the bright light above, the little guy — we’ll call him “Dan” — struggled through the pile of gravel where his mother had buried him several weeks before.

As he reached the top of the stones, Dan poked his tiny little head into the light, and without warning, he was rudely greeted by a swift current.

Godzilla-sized Brookie, eh!

January 28, 2007 By JD Leave a Comment

I know, I know…it looks like I got a little creative with Photoshop on this one, but this picture is legit. What you’re looking at is the largest brook trout anybody has laid hands in at least 90 years and, perhaps ever.

The massive brookie was taken in the fall by Tim Matheson of Serridon, Manitoba in Manitoba’s Lake Barbe. The really cool part of the story is the fish didn’t end up on the barbe…

A Steelhead for Thanksgiving

November 23, 2006 By JD Leave a Comment

He got the idea from a Zane Grey novel he had read a year prior. It was just a passing phrase in which Grey, who spent a good chunk of his time in a cabin on the Rogue River in Oregon, mentioned something about killing a steelhead for Thanksgiving dinner. The old man didn’t think much about it at first, but then the thought of a steelhead instead of a turkey began to intrigue him.
