Underwater View: Braided line vs. Monofilament

September 28, 2014 By JD Leave a Comment

Here are a couple underwater self portraits of me and a buddy fishing to try to prove a point. A guy I know swears that the fish don’t care if you tie your lure direct to brightly colored braid. I, on the other hand, always run at least 10 feet of mono (or better yet, fluorocarbon) leader material between my lure and mainline when using braid.

Speaking of monofilament, check out my top gear picks.

Take a look at the following two pix and come to your own conclusions…we begin with yellow braid tied directly to the hook.

Is that a laser beam??

Is that a laser beam??

In this shot, I switched to mono. Seems like a lot more fish around. Just saying…

Hey, the great yellow line from the sky went away and the fish came back!

A Dolly Varden Feeding Frenzy!

September 26, 2014 By JD Leave a Comment

This a fun little sequence I shot a couple weeks back in Alaska. Here’s a little insight into how a fish can get others into a frenzy just by biting your bait…

A dolly Varden has grabbed a glob of eggs intended for salmon…Apparently, his little buddy wants in on the action!

Underwater Salmon Bite…or Not?

September 16, 2014 By JD 2 Comments

Here’s a a really interesting sequence of underwater photos I took of a small king attacking a glob of roe…and then passing on it. Sorry for the fuzziness of these shots, but this fish  was moving so quickly I couldn’t get him into focus!

He's a nice cluster of red eggs and a chartreuse Corkie drifting along...

At this point, a hookup looks like a strong possibility…or does he really see which way the hook is facing and attacks from the opposite side?

Check out that cloud of sweet milky goodness…how the heck could he resist? Maybe he's just circling around for another pass...

Or not! What the heck happened here? And how often does it happen per day?? Inquiring minds want to know!

Up Close with a Dolly Varden

September 3, 2014 By JD Leave a Comment

dolly and roe
Here’s a cool pic I snapped underwater of a Dolly Varden just after it inhaled some eggs and a Corky. I just got home from two months in Alaska, and it will take me some time to sort through all my photos and videos, but I’ve got some pretty cool stuff to share…including some fun video of silver salmon hitting Zara Spooks and poppers!

Stay tuned…

Salmon on Dry Flies…The Movie

August 23, 2014 By JD Leave a Comment

Dry Fly salmonOkay, so humpies aren’t Alaska’s most beloved salmon. But, I tell you what…throw some topwater at ’em and they’re a blast! YEEEEHAAAAWWW!!! By the way, sorry for the shaky camera work, but I was casting and working the fly with one hand and filming with the other! :)

JD heads north to Alaska for some super fun topwater dry fly salmon action!
