My good pal Mike Perusse of Washington State shows that you don’t necessarily need to have pink fingers at the end of the day to catch a river king.
Mikey caught and released this chrome beauty on Alaska’s Nushagak River on a 15 -foot GLoomis spey rod and a fly affectionately known as “Blue Bird.”
Apparently, Wade Hayes can do more than play guitar and sing…turns out the country star is also quite handy with a rod and reel, thank you.
Here’s a sweet smallmouth bass he caught while fishing Nashville’s Percy Priest Lake with our pal and pro basser, Big Fred Contaoi who fishes the FLW Tour for Orange County Choppers.
And as far as Big Fred switching gears and doing a little pickin’ on the 6-string…well…it’s not pretty (trust me).

We did a guide trip upriver Tuesday and, on the way home, decided at the last second to drop the boat in below Shanghai Falls and do a little fun fishing. After approximately 1,472 shad in about an hour and a half, Reilly hooked this big hen…his biggest to date. Also a first for me was having to run back to the boat..at his urging…to grab the net and BogaGrip. Can’t say I’ve ever Boga’d a shad before…

Okay, so most 9-year-old kids are happy fishing with a red/white bobber and a worm. But not Austin McKean of Terrace, BC (shown here with dad Gill). Nope, “Austie” prefers the spey rod and may be the only kid on the planet his age who owns one.
A couple weeks back, the little dude caught what scores of adult fly anglers are still looking for — his first steelie on the fly. Way to go, eh!
Yea, it’s April and most Northern California steelhead streams are closed…but there are a few places still open where you can get a last-minute cure for your jones…
