Nor Cal: Water & Snow everywhere!

March 24, 2011 By JD 4 Comments

The Howe Ave. parking lot on the American River underwater

Tthe calendar says “spring” but Northern California has been getting hammered by a series of huge winter storms all week which have delivered serious amounts of rain to the lower elevations and many feet of snow to the high country…the likes of which we haven’t seen since I was a kid.

Of course, all that weather isn’t without complications. Most NorCal rivers are raging and the reservoirs are full. The Sacramento River is currently running around 100,000 CFS and getting very close to flood stage. With all the snow in the high country, let’s keep our fingers crossed that there are no Pineapple Express-style warm storms heading this way! On a positive note, we should have plenty of water this year!Click here to read more…

Catch fish, feed people: The Oregon Tuna Classic

March 23, 2011 By JD 1 Comment

The Oregon Tuna Classic series of fun albie fishing events is coming to 4 different ports this summer. This is an awesome event — you go and have a ball catching fish and then do a good deed by feeding some hungry folks. I know some of the guys involved in this and all I can say is great people = great event.

I’ll fill ya in more as the summer progresses but to get some inside dope, click HERE

Stormy afternoon on Clear Lake

Photo: Fred Contaoi

Nor Cal has been getting hammered by storms this week…which makes for some lousy fishing. On the bright side, however, you get treated to some dramatic scenes like this one our pal Big Fred Contaoi shot with his iPhone on Clear Lake the other day.

Doesn’t this look like one of those photos on a motivational poster — the kind you see on the walls in the reception area of many businesses — ya know, with some sort of catchy phrase like “The greater the struggle, the sweeter the reward…” or something like that.

In any case…great shot, Big Boy! Thanks!

Millions of sardines die in Southern California harbor

Millions of dead sardines in Redondo Harbor

Millions of dead of sardines were discovered in the Redondo Beach harbor near Los Angeles Tuesday morning, initially raising concerns about possible water contamination.

Water samples tested on-site Tuesday were clear of contamination, but California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) wardens collected about a dozen dead fish to send via overnight mail to the DFG laboratory in Rancho Cordova, where biologists will run tests to confirm that the die-off was not due to toxins in the water. The battle to rid California of striped bass rages on!

February 11, 2011 By JD 16 Comments

California's Most Wanted

Those of you who thought that the battle to kill all striped bass in California died when State Assembly Member Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield) had her anti-striper legislation kicked to the curb for a second straight year last summer…think again! Water purveyors from the southern portion of the state, along with the National Marine Fisheries Service, are waging a war to get stripers eradicated from our waters.

The flawed logic goes like this: Get rid of the predatory stripers and salmon will come back. But it’s just a diversionary tactic to get us to ignore the fact that the Delta ecosystem is literally falling apart at the seams due to unprecedented water exports and poor water quality. And the funny thing about it all is getting rid of stripers may actually cause worse problems for native fishes in the Delta. Listen to what Dr. Peter Moyle, Professor of Fish Biology at UC Davis and William A. Bennett, UC Davis, Fish Ecologist have to say about it all:

“The key to restoring populations of desirable species is to return the Delta to a more variable, estuarine environment,” they say. “Reducing striped bass and other predator populations is unlikely to make a difference in saving endangered fishes, and will serve only to distract attention from the real problems. Any program to control striped bass should carefully consider the likely consequences. If initiated, it should involve an intensive study effort on the impacts of the program and an adaptive management plan (missing from all current proposals) to make sure the alleged cure is not worse than the supposed disease.” Read more reasons why removing our stripers is a bad idea on the California Water Blog
