Lake Pardee primed for action!

February 1, 2009 By JD Leave a Comment

When Northern California’s Lake Pardee re-opens to fishing on Friday, Feb. 6th., 2009, anglers should see some white-hot fishing…if it’s anything like the action we encountered on Media Day on Sunday.

The preview day of fishing was open to a select few bass pros and media members (organized by Kent Brown of Ultimate Bass Radio and hosted by Pardee Recreation Co. owners Richard and Kerry Copper). Record-class smallmouth bass were the target de jour. Pardee is rapidly gaining a reputation of being a top-notch smallie fishery, and several bronzebacks in the 8 to 9+ pound class were taken there last season.

But’s let’s back up here…

At last…some good salmon news!

It’s been a while since we’ve had any positive news on the salmon front, but a study recently released by Oregon State University may point to better times ahead.

Beach Fishing Options in Hawaii??

December 19, 2008 By JD Leave a Comment

The wife and I are headed to Maui and Honolulu for Christmas get together with her family. I’ve seen that in past trips you caught reef fish on Kastmasters and such. What kind of gear and licensing do I need to bring to sneak away from the in-laws and catch some fish?

Word! –Sabs

Yo, DJ Sab-A-Loooow,

I just took a 7-foot trout rod with 6-pound test and some 1/4-ounce Kastmasters one year. This summer, I had a ball with white Flukes for larger meat-eating critters and then slow-crawled Carolina-rigged Berkley GULP! Sandworms for all sorts of interesting fish. Take several bags as many of those reef fish have teeth!

As fas as the license goes, I looked all over the internet and asked the sporting goods person at Wal Mart over there and couldn’t find anything about needing a license while shore fishing in the ocean. You for sure need one in freshwater, though…

Line Diameter Comparisons?

December 14, 2008 By JD Leave a Comment

JD,
Do you have an idea where someone can get information on diameters of fishing lines to compare one to another?

Swimbait Rig for Stripers?

December 9, 2008 By JD Leave a Comment

Hey JD,

I love the videos. They’re informative and fun to watch. Anyway, what do you primarily use when fishing swimbaits for stripers? Your tackle setup (reel, rod, line, swimbait)?

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

For fishing swimbaits I use a GLoomis 7.6-foot GWR 901, which is rated for 10-20 lb. test. Lately, I’ve been running my old Shimano Curado Super Free 201 spooled up with 20-pound braided line and 20-lb. flouro leader. Swimbaits are from Mad River Outfitters: (707) 826-7201.

I’ll also be doing seminars on stripers at the Sacramento International Sportsmen’s Expo this winter, so stop by for more info!

Take care,

JD
