Reason #110 to not like lining

September 9, 2007 By JD Leave a Comment

Why I hate lining...reason #110

Okay, so it’s no secret that I’m not a big fan of the popular salmon fishing “method” of lining or beading, in which long (10 to 15 feet long) leaders are employed and a small plastic is slid down the leader as a “lure.”

The rig is drifted along the bottom, with just enough lead to keep it moving along with the current. The basic concept here is to drift the leader through the jaws of a salmon and “floss” or snare them.

Lining is legal (legalized snagging) but my big problem with it is that the fish don’t actually bite the bead. They “eat” a liner’s bead the same way you “eat” a bug while riding a motorcycle…in other words, it’s a forced feeding type of situation. To me, that is a direct contradiction of the very essence, the definition, of fishing. In fact, if you look up the official definition of “Angling” in the California Department of Fish & Game’s freshwater fishing regulations booklet, it says that a fish has “to willingly take the lure or bait.”

In addition to the fact that snaring salmon without them having a say in the matter is, to me, unsporting, the long leaders also pose a threat to the river. In high traffic areas, the amount of lost leader line in the river is staggering. All types of critters get snared in this discarded line — otters, birds, fish, and even props.

Take a close look at this little beauty I picked up in my kicker prop. Check out all the beads!

I’m just saying…

Tell me this fish didn’t really look like this…

Skanky Brown

Mad River Outfitters in Arcata, CA may just be one of the coolest tackle shops around, but even they have some skeletons in the closet…like this sorry excuse for a brown mount. To their credit, this nasty beast isn’t displayed on the wall (anymore) but is instead piled on a junk shelf in the back room. I have to assume that this fish actually looked better than this when it was pulled from the water…because now it’s so ugly that it kinda reminds me of a “brown trout” that I “released” into the porcelain pond earlier this morning…

Feather River salmon “fly”

Poacher's Rig.jpg

Forget the $40,000 jet boats and fancy gear.

Ditch the secret egg cures and custom-painted plugs.

All you really need to catch salmon on the Feather is one of these babies.

Simply cast out and let the rig settle on the bottom. Next, start cranking as fast as you can and punctuate your retrieve with violent yanks of the rod tip.

If you ever feel a pause or hesitation, take a swing like you’re Barry Freakin’ Bonds.

In fact, do that every so often even if you don’t feel anything…just for good measure.

The fish often take this fly with their bellies or tails. But don’t worry, they were just trying to crush their prey with their bodies before they consumed it with their mouths.

Oh yea, one more thing…this technique works best after dark. The fish just somehow seem to “bite” the Feather River Fly better when the sun’s down. And it’s especially effective in shallow waters that are closed to fishing.

Don’t forget to take as many fish home as you can fit into the trunk of your car…we’ve got too many damn salmon, anyway!

“Rainbow” Trout??

"Rainbow" Trout

Okay, so you know I’m always on the hunt for really, really bad fish mounts. I just get a kick out of ’em for some bizarre reason. Anyway, I recently ran across this dandy…I think this one is so great because it looks like the bastard offspring of a rainbow trout-carp breeding session.

Damn, who’s that handsome cover model??

F&H News Cover

Proving without a doubt that the outdoor media has extremely low standards when it comes to models, here’s my second cover shot in a month…

Actually, I was kinda disappointed. You see, I’ve been hoping for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year honors, but they’ve yet to call. I know, because I’ve been sitting by the phone 24-7 waiting…and waiting…and waiting. Hmmm, maybe they don’t have the right number.

Speaking of magazines, the cover of Forbes wouldn’t suck, either, but that’s probably not in the cards anytime soon. Of course, in my days of being a wanna-be pop star, I figured the Rolling Stone cover was a forgone conclusion but, alas, that didn’t pan out. Oh well, I’ve still got my old music video that I’ll post here at some point.

Anyway, thanks to the Fishing & Hunting News gang for running my ugly mug on the upcoming issue of California edition. Check it out for the latest scoop on steelheading and all things hunting and fishing in the Golden State. www.fishingandhuntingnews.com
