California Hatchery Killing Salmon??

October 9, 2012 By JD 10 Comments

In an attempt to increase fall and spring Chinook salmon runs to California’s Feather River, hatchery personnel have been killing thousands of salmon this year. What gives?

It’s a move that biologists deem necessary — cull fish to help get a distinct separation between the fall and spring runs — but as you may guess, anglers aren’t too fired up about the whole deal.

20120910-160930.jpgThe Klamath River’s chinook salmon run is forecasted to be massive this year and the fishing should be epic! The bite is already going strong and will only get better over the next few weeks!

The above photo was sent to me by guide John Klar and the lower from Mike Stratman, who are obviously having some fun on the Big K!

News Flash: the “tuna water” has moved onshore near Sana Cruz over the past couple days and on Thursday, boats running out of Santa Cruz harbor only 15-17 miles found nice conditions and scores of 20-30+ fish.

There is a nice weather window Friday and Saturday and then the weather is forecasted to kick back up…

9,000-year-old fishing tackle found off Sweden

June 6, 2012 By JD 1 Comment

While I thought some of those Mitchell 300’s I have buried in the garage are old, this takes the cake:

Marine archaeologists from Stockholm’s Sodertorn University recently found off the coast of Sweden what could be the world’s oldest fishing artifacts. The researchers found found finger-thick hazel rods grouped on the sea bed, which are thought to be the remains of stationary fish basket traps.

“This is the world’s oldest find when it comes to fishing,” said Johan Ronnby, a professor in marine archaeology.
