The Santa Ynez River: Where 25,000 steelhead once roamed!

The river now, looking downstream from Buellton towards the sea.

Santa Barbara, California (about an hour and a half north of LA) doesn’t exactly inspire images of deep canyons and emerald green water full of steelhead…but it would have back in the 1940’s, when the Santa Ynez River was home to annual runs of 25,000 anadramous rainbows!

But only a token handful of the great fish make it back each year now. The usual band of culprits did the river in: Water diversions, dams and development. etc. The biggest blow came in the early 1950’s when massive Cachuma Dam was completed, effectively blocking off the bulk of steelhead spawning habitat.

Halibut & shrimp: Two great tastes that taste great together!

The halibut fishing from Alaska to California’s Channel Islands has been good this year. While the firm, white flesh of both Pacific and California halibut take well to just about any cooking style, here’s a fun way to make some good grub with your left-overs: Halibut & Shrimp Cakes.

This one comes from our pal Scott “The Sporting Chef” Leysath, inter-galactic wild game cooking stud and co-host of the popular TV show, Hunt Fish Cook.

“This recipe works just as well with uncooked fish as it does with cooked leftovers, although the cooked fish is a bit easier to work with,” he says. “Treat the cooked, flaky halibut as you would crab meat. Make sure that it’s thoroughly dry, not soggy, before you start assembling the cakes or they will fall apart when cooked. If the fish is uncooked, finely dice with a knife or flake with the tines of a fork.”Click here to read more…

Mexican Salmon!?!?!?

Who's up for some pink meat fish tacos?


Every once in a while, boats off San Diego will catch a salmon or two. Even less frequently, there’s one caught south of the border. Then, you’ve got Thomas D. Bryant, the great Mexican salmon slayer. He caught this hatchery coho while fishing off a jetty 72 KM south of the U.S. Border. And get this…it’s his second one!

This fish was a loooong way from home, too — especially when you consider that California uses maxillary clips — not adipose clips — on coho. Seeing that this chromer is missing his adipose fin, it was at least from an Oregon hatchery…and, who knows…maybe even further north than that! Read the entire story on BLOODY DECKS

Ribble River Surprise!

And this, folks, is why you play the game...


Here’s yet another prime example why fishing is so damn awesome: Our good friend from across “The Pond,” Richard Masters, fished the River Ribble near Lancashire in Northwest England last week. Unfortunately, the river was still high and pretty much blown out following a recent flood — and the fishing was lousy.

Masters says he threw hardware in the muddy water all day without success and then, on his way home the next morning, he made a quick stop along the river to get a feel for the new 5-weight trout fly rod he had just purchased…and then a funny thing happened: Click here to read more…
