Up Close with a Dolly Varden

September 3, 2014 By JD Leave a Comment

dolly and roe
Here’s a cool pic I snapped underwater of a Dolly Varden just after it inhaled some eggs and a Corky. I just got home from two months in Alaska, and it will take me some time to sort through all my photos and videos, but I’ve got some pretty cool stuff to share…including some fun video of silver salmon hitting Zara Spooks and poppers!

Stay tuned…

Underwater Photos: The Rejection

August 17, 2014 By JD 2 Comments

Sometimes everything can be right…the cast, the drift, the bait…and still the fish don’t get hooked. Here’s an interesting scene I shot on a tributary to the Togiak River in Alaska, where a nice Dolly Varden does a fly-by on roe cluster but doesn’t commit to the bait.

The Dolly Varden makes his move...

But something just isn't right…the close proximity of the camera perhaps?

Even that milky goodness seeping out of the bait wasn't enough for this guy!

Even that milky goodness seeping out of the bait wasn’t enough for this guy! Why do you think he didn’t go all in?

The Best Topwater Bite Ever

Prepare for cardiac arrest! This pike comes out of nowhere to attack a topwater frog in Southwest Alaska and scared the heck outta me! I’m just happy I didn’t drop the camera! :)

I just returned from a month guiding in Alaska, where the fishing was amazing! I shot a ton of stuff with my cameras, so over the next couple weeks, stay tuned for lots of cool pix and underwater video…here’s a quick sample: Check out this king munching a gob of sulfite roe…I think he wants it!

Top 3 Giant Halibut of 2011

January 6, 2012 By JD 2 Comments

Holy beer batter Batman, 2011 may just go down as the “Year of the Halibut!” There were three absolute monsters taken last fall that are more in the “blimp hangar door” class than barn doors.

First up is this one above from Norway which weighed an almost hard to fathom 539 pounds! Here’s the link

This monster came from the waters off Gustavus, Alaska (near Glacier Bay) and was 95 inches long and weighed 482.5 pounds! Read more at Bloody Decks

Then there was the one from Iceland that tipped the scales to 485 pounds! See more at Outdoor Life
