Ah, the wonder of kids! Wandering the Monterey waterfront Weds afternoon, I showed Coop (in orange) and cousin Ben the famed Wild Wave, once one of the most popular albacore tuna boats on the West Coast.
Unfortunately, the once proud vessel has been mothballed for years now and is catching nothing but dust and weeds.
That didn’t bother the kids at all. In fact, they were so impressed with the Wild Wave that they stared up at it in awe for a long moment.
Then, when I told them that my good pal Mike Baxter used to captain the boat, Coop got a huge smile and said…
“Mike Baxter is the coolest guy in the world!!!” :)
Okay surf perch fans, here’s your chance to flash your mad skills: The 9th Annual Sand Crab Classic Perch Derby is coming to Santa Cruz on March 9, 2013. I’ve said it before…the event is about as much fun you can have on the beach with your clothes on!
Internationally renown charter skipper Mike Baxter, and kayak angler extraordinaire, Allan Bushnell, are the diabolical masterminds behind the Sand Crab Classic and they put on one hell of an event! So much so, in fact that it has a rabid following and sells out every year!
Before we get too far along here, it’s important to note that the perch derby has a higher calling than just being fun. Proceeds from the event go to the Monterey Bay Trout & Salmon Project, which raises salmon and steelhead for release into local waters.
Sure, they’re great tools for fishing lakes in the Dog Days of Summer, when the trout and salmon are holding down deep. They allow you to present your lures at precise depths and then get back to that same section of the water column easily. Handy devices to be sure, but I also think there’s an inherent flaw in the system…
Think about it:
You see some fish on your meter, take note of their depth and then drop your gear down to that zone. Sometimes it’s as easy as that. But other times, you may see fish on the screen all day long and have to scratch and claw for a bite. In those cases, we’ll often blame the moon phase, barometric pressure, wind direction or a combination thereof.
But it may be something completely different. Let’s take a look at what’s really happening down there…Click here to read more…
Okay, surf perch fans, time to get your freak on! The always epic Sand Crab Classic Perch Tournament is rolling into Santa Cruz for its eighth consecutive year on March 10!
This is one of the best-run and fun events we’ve been to and it’s all for good cause, too: Proceeds go to the Monterey Bay Trout & Salmon Project. The Sand Crab Classic always sells out, so if you want in, you’d better hurry — entries will be limited to the first 300 anglers. Forget the Olympics, Super Bowl and Bassmaster Classic…the world’s greatest sporting event, the Sand Crab Classic Surf Perch Derby, is coming to Santa Cruz March 12!
Already in it’s 7th season, the Classic is a really cool, family-friendly event that features some good clean fun, great grub and, if you’ve got skills, maybe even a trophy!
Santa Cruz legends Mike Baxter and Allen Bushnell host the event, and they’re saying that the perch fishing has been much better already this year, so the 2011 incarnation of the derby should feature some pretty good action. Perhaps, more importantly, they’ve got a new T-shirt design for this year’s event (shirts from past Classics have sold for as much as $1.50 on Craigslist and are highly coveted along the coast).
You’d better hurry…entries are limited to the first 300 anglers. To register, click HERE
