20-pound steelhead!

Jake “The Giant” Martinson is a cool kid I used to work with in Alaska who’s turned into quite the steelhead angler. Here’s a photo of a 20-pounder he caught and released last weekend near Forks, WA on the Olympic Peninsula.

I’ll step aside here and let the kid tell how it all went down…

How to catch trophy bass (and maybe even a world record!)

March 3, 2008 By JD 1 Comment

Clear Lake largemouth bass

So you’ve been out there bass fishing for years and years and haven’t caught anything over 10 pounds. You feel like you’ve been doing everything right because you always seem to catch fish, but just not the big dogs. What gives? Well, read on, my big bass-free friends!

Trout Trollin’ with Flies

Rainbow Trout

Okay, so the die-hard purist fluff chuckers may not approve of this, but one of the best ways to catch trout in the high country in the early season is to troll flies on light spinning tackle.

It’s an extremely deadly technique when the fish are up near the surface and I’ve had some memorable days in the Sierras dragging feathers and glue around. It’s a relatively simple technique, but there are a couple little things you can do to improve your success….

The Natural

Coop & Dad
I took my 20-month-old kid down to the river the other day for his first-ever fishing lesson (we bypassed bluegill and went straight to steelhead — got to start ’em out right, ya know?). While he seemed pretty fired up about it all, it was dad who will never forget the moment. Seeing a little bundle of your genetic material holding a rod in his hands for the first time is…wow…hard to describe.

Catch more American River chromers, learn why kings bite in freshwater, how to fix you old oar blades and how to bring a river back to life!

Check out the Feb. issue of Western Outdoors Magazine for my article of fishing the American River for steelhead like this one and all the other species that call the river home (though I left the carp and squawfish tips out). And if you’ve got a rotting old set of oar blades on your driftboat or raft shafts (like I once did), you can learn how to quickly replace them in my Tips of the Trade column in the Feb. issue of Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine.

Also in that same issue of STS, look for the photo essay I did on the Stanislaus River Restoration project I worked on last fall.

In the Feb. issue of Fish Alaska Magazine, you’ll find my article about chasing road-side silvers in Cordova and the first installment of my Salmon Sense column in which we’ll take a look at why kings bite in freshwater.

Whew…just thinking about all that makes my typing fingers sore!
