Biscuit Eater could sense something big was about to happen.??There was a nervous electricity in the water and all the others of his kind seemed to be jittery. A low,
metallic sound was emanating from the far end of the concrete lane he’d called home for his entire life. The sound was soft at first but it was getting louder by the second. Something unfamiliar…
Godzilla-sized Brookie, eh!
I know, I know…it looks like I got a little creative with Photoshop on this one, but this picture is legit. What you’re looking at is the largest brook trout anybody has laid hands in at least 90 years and, perhaps ever.
The massive brookie was taken in the fall by Tim Matheson of Serridon, Manitoba in Manitoba’s Lake Barbe. The really cool part of the story is the fish didn’t end up on the barbe…
The best lure of all time???
The following is an excerpt from an article I have in the current edition of Western Outdoors Magazine.
So, what’s the best lure of all time?
It’s an interesting question and one that’s guaranteed to stir the pot down at the local watering hole, plunking shack or boat ramp. Steelhead anglers might vote for the Spin-N-Glo, Hot Shot or the original Wiggle Wart, while salmon fans would likely go for a Kwikfish or Flatfish.
Bassers, on the other hand, would probably choose a worm of some type, perhaps a Senko, a spinnerbait or maybe a flippin’ jig. And so it goes – trout fishermen and panfish enthusiasts would have their own favorites, as would stripers chasers, tuna trollers and kokanee anglers and on and on.
22-pound Mad River Steelhead!
After an epic 35-minute battle that took him on a 500-yard hike down the Mad River, 17-year-old Roy Heape of Oroville, CA joined an elite club this week when he caught & released this 22-pound, 11-ounce wild buck steelie.
The big fish was going to be just a good fish tale for the kid because he didn’t have a camera with him at the time. Luckily, Jason Ford of Petaluma happened to be fishing nearby and snapped a couple photos of the youngster and his monster buck.
And by the way, the biggest steelhead of Heape’s career prior to this fish? How about 2 pounds!!
Maybe I’m a little jaded these days, but methinks Mr. Heape may want to retire now…it’s going to be tough to top that one!
Salmon Jerky: A Great X-Mas Gift!
If you’re sick of the malls and the holiday traffic’s driving you nuts, here’s a little tip: stay home and make everybody on your Christmas list some smoked salmon jerky this year.
I’ve made a ton of smoked salmon over the years and, through much trial and a ton of error, I’ve got the process down pat. Now, I can expect a quality product each time. However, in recent years, I’ve been making little test batches of salmon jerky along with the traditional smoked variety and it’s become my most requested Christmas gift. Salmon jerky is easy to make, keeps longer than regular smoked salmon and is a great finger food/appetizer. Here’s how to do it:
