Time for the Klamath!

20120910-160930.jpgThe Klamath River’s chinook salmon run is forecasted to be massive this year and the fishing should be epic! The bite is already going strong and will only get better over the next few weeks!

The above photo was sent to me by guide John Klar and the lower from Mike Stratman, who are obviously having some fun on the Big K!

Long Live the King!

I was just messing around with a new photo editing app on my phone last night up here in salmon camp and thought this turned out kinda cool.

As I like to say after a king breaks off or spits the hook: “May he live long and have many babies…” Looks like this guy may have done just that!

Set a Drift for Spooky Trout

I have issues with downriggers….

Sure, they’re great tools for fishing lakes in the Dog Days of Summer, when the trout and salmon are holding down deep. They allow you to present your lures at precise depths and then get back to that same section of the water column easily. Handy devices to be sure, but I also think there’s an inherent flaw in the system…

Think about it:

You see some fish on your meter, take note of their depth and then drop your gear down to that zone. Sometimes it’s as easy as that. But other times, you may see fish on the screen all day long and have to scratch and claw for a bite. In those cases, we’ll often blame the moon phase, barometric pressure, wind direction or a combination thereof.

But it may be something completely different. Let’s take a look at what’s really happening down there…Click here to read more…

The Aftermath…

August 5, 2012 By JD 7 Comments

I ran across this pic of my ol’ trusty 20-foot Willie drifter last night and had to post it.

I took this shot as we were pulling off the Trinity River after chasing salmon and Steelies. It was a boy’s fun trip with me, K-Dog, Harry Ibach and Mad River Jimmy Davis and the boat was absolutely destroyed with rods all over the place, lures, roe slime and junk food wrappers.

Some folks might be mortified to see their boat in this condition, but I think this is exactly how a vessel should look after a bunch of friends hit the water together. It’s pretty obvious to me that a good time was had by all here…

Albacore show 15 miles off Santa Cruz!

August 2, 2012 By JD 3 Comments

20120802-220012.jpg
News Flash: the “tuna water” has moved onshore near Sana Cruz over the past couple days and on Thursday, boats running out of Santa Cruz harbor only 15-17 miles found nice conditions and scores of 20-30+ fish.

There is a nice weather window Friday and Saturday and then the weather is forecasted to kick back up…

For an in-depth look at all that’s happening out of this port, check out out SC Fishing Report
