WDF&W to Eliminate Steelhead Fishing in Puget Sound Drainages?

November 9, 2010 By JD 2 Comments

Could buget cuts end steelheading in Puget Sound rivers?

Uh, oh! Thanks to a $20 to $30 million in shortfall in funds, The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is faced with making some super deep cuts in upcoming years, several of which would have profound impacts on anglers and hunters in the state…

Department Director, Phil Anderson, said cuts might include 20 wildlife enforcement jobs, closure of seven to 11 fish hatcheries, the elimination of steelhead fishing in Puget Sound tributaries and closure of some of the agency’s 700 public access areas.

Say what?

A 30-pound laker on 2-pound tippet!

October 26, 2010 By JD 1 Comment

IGFA Photo

While I’ve never quite understood the fascination with fighting monster fish on super light line (especially for the sake of the fish’s health), I must say that a 30-pound, 8-ounce lake trout caught on 2-pound tippet is a pretty impressive feat.

Frank Bluch of Corio Victoria, Australia pulled off the feat on August 7, while fishing Great Bear Lake, in Canada’s NW Territories with guide Captain Mike Harrison. The monster mack munched a white streamer and was weighed and released. If approved, will obliterate the current IGFA 2-pound tippet record, a 13-pound, 8-ounce fish from Canada’s Wellesley Lake.

First, you have the casual fan, the one who likes to get out and chase steelies around from time to time – especially when the river’s perfect and it’s in somebody else’s boat. Then, you have the small, masochistic, semi-antisocial, diabolically obsessed, over-the-top society of incurable lunatics.

When it comes to steelheading, there’s not a lot of gray area between the two. You’re pretty much one or the other. To help you figure out which category you fall into, read over the following statements. If you can’t relate to many of them, you’re probably living a healthy, normal and productive life. On the other hand, if you can relate to most or all of these, welcome to the club, brother… Click here to read more…
