JD’s Near-Miss with Rock Stardom!

December 19, 2008 By JD 21 Comments

Okay, many of you have heard the stories of my near-miss in the music industry in the early 1990s. The short version is this: A buddy and I decided we wanted to become rock stars, but didn’t have the talent. So, instead we went for a gimmick and blended two kinds of music together…country & rap (otherwise known as “crap”) and, quite surprisingly, we damn near made it. An expensive video, three record contract offers from Nashville and a meeting with Fleetwood Mac’s producer followed and we were on our way. Somewhere along the line, however, the train got derailed and the Boom Cowboys fizzled out..and the Beatles were able to breathe a sigh of relief.

So, for all of you who’ve been asking all these years, here’s your shot to finally see the Boom Cowboys Cut It Up video. And yep, sad to say that’s me with the hot pink shirt and cow guitar…(hey, it was a loooong time ago, what can I say!).

And here’s another shot of the Boom Cowboyz working their magic in the studio. Apparently, pink was a common thread in my life back in the day…

Well, there you have it…if you really, really want to hear the whole story, maybe I’ll tell ya sometime out on the boat. Now, go ahead…the comments section is yours. Do your worst!

Do you Wahoo??

December 12, 2008 By JD 2 Comments

Fishing for Wahoo

Wahoo (or “ono” if you’re hanging out in the Hawaiian Islands) are one of the baddest fish in the ocean. They can reach speeds of nearly 50 mph, have some seriously nasty teeth and can grow quite large — the world record is 184 pounds. They are a top-notch game fish in tropical and sub-tropical waters around the globe and are divine table fare.

Some folks say that the name Wahoo is a derivation of the name of the Hawaiian Island Oahu…while others say “Wahoo” is what you shout when you hook one. Their Island name, Ono, comes from the Hawaiian word for delicious: ‘ono.

Whatever you call ’em, wahoo are a blast to catch and even more fun to throw on the grill!

Here’s how to catch ’em:

Baitcasters: lefty or righty??

May 11, 2008 By JD 6 Comments

JD, I am new to bass fishing and and ready to purchase my first baitcaster reel (I know I’ve got some tangles in my future!). My question is, should I go with a left-handed reel or a right-handed? Great site, by the way!

–Alex S.

Hey Alex, you didn’t say if you’re a righty or a southpaw, but since the vast majority of the word is made up of righthanders, we’ll assume you are too.

I’m a righty and prefer all my baitcasters to have a left-hand retrieve. My dominant hand (right) does the casting and my left cranks the reel…all without me having to switch hands.

For reasons that escape me, most righties like right-hand cranks, but it seems silly to me to cast with the right hand and then have to move the rod to the left hand so you can crank with your right. I’m especially mystified by pro bassers who do it that way…when time is money, you’d think those guys wouldn’t want to waste the time it takes to switch hands after each cast.

Over the course of a day during a tournament, that probably translates into a few extra casts if they did the other way. And when ounces separate guys from tens of thousands of dollars, you’d think…
