The Greatest Fishing Trip of All Time!

April 13, 2011 By JD 2 Comments

I‘ve read several books about Lewis & Clark over the years, including a version of their Journals that was as thick as a Manhattan phone book. Not only was their journey one of history’s most epic road trips, but man, oh man, did they see some spectacular fishing! The numbers of salmon and steelhead they encountered on the Columbia-Clearwater-Snake river system were beyond imagination. When I finally get my jet boat time machine built, my first trip is going to be along much of the Lewis & Clark Trail!

Apparently, I am not alone in my fascination with the fishing that the dynamic duo and the Corps. of Discovery encountered…The Federation of Fly Fishers has created a virtual and physical exhibit on this very subject! Check this out: Undaunted Anglers: Fishing with Lewis & Clark

How to Cook Trout with Herb Vinaigrette

January 13, 2011 By JD Leave a Comment

It all starts here...

I caught a mess o’ trout recently and, while I typically release most of them, I decided to keep a couple for dinner this time around. I usually just wrap the fish in foil, add some lemon, butter, pepper and garlic and throw it on the barbie…you really can’t go wrong with that method…but I was just in the mood for something different. So, I checked in with our resident master game and fish chef, Scott Leysath.

Leysath, co-host of the popular TV show,“Hunt-Fish-Cook,” suggested doing the trout with a herb vinaigrette.?? He said you can bake, broil or pan-fry trout this way, but his favorite method is to throw it on the grill. Anyway, here’s how to impress your family, friends and taste buds:?? Bass Baits for Fall Trout

October 17, 2009 By JD 13 Comments

Fat RainbowIn autumn, when the weather and water temperatures start cooling, big trout begin to shake off their summer lethargy and become active. The dropping water temperatures get the fish salivating like Pavlov’s dogs and they move in close to shore to feast before the onset of winter.?? That’s exactly what makes the upcoming several weeks the most productive time of year to hook a monster.

Super Trout: The Donaldson Rainbow

April 4, 2008 By JD 7 Comments

amadorWhile I’ve never been a big fan of the hatchery “round-tailed” rainbow trout that get planted in waters throughout the West, I have to say that the Donaldson strain rainbows of Nor. Cal’s Lake Amador (and other places) are extremely cool “truck trout.”

Trout Trollin’ with Flies

March 1, 2008 By JD Leave a Comment

Rainbow Trout

Okay, so the die-hard purist fluff chuckers may not approve of this, but one of the best ways to catch trout in the high country in the early season is to troll flies on light spinning tackle.

It’s an extremely deadly technique when the fish are up near the surface and I’ve had some memorable days in the Sierras dragging feathers and glue around. It’s a relatively simple technique, but there are a couple little things you can do to improve your success….
