Pull, tweak and drop on my friends!! Everybody’s doing it…
Barbecue at Justin Barry’s house! While fishing Monterey Bay with Kevin Seeger last week, Barry hoked and landed this 79-pound, 4-ounce white sea bass near Pajaro, which should be the next California State Record for the species.
Barry’s catch was weighed on a certified scale and bested the current mark, a 78 pounder caught by David Sternberg in Monterey in 2002.The paperwork is already in to the Department of Fish and Game and Barry should be in the record books soon!
There’s something really special going on in California’s Monterey Bay right now…a white sea bass bite of epic proportions that’s been blowing up for several weeks, with no obvious end in sight. Guys are going just a mile or two out, making some live squid and then hooking lots of fish in the 30- to 50-pound class.

Well, the amazing White Sea Bass bite off Monterey, CA just keeps on going and going! Here’s a nice one caught on Saturday by Matt B. drifting live squid a mere 1.5 glassy miles out of the harbor that’s our latest Hawg of the Month Contest entry.
Big, great-tasting, hard-fighting fish, flat calm conditions, free bait and you only burn a couple gallons of fuel a day…what’s not to like about this gig?
Apparently Mike Baxter of Santa Cruz has a little Capt’n in him…since he just ran away with the August Hawg of the Month voting with his 50-pound “cheek pinching” white sea bass from Monterey Bay. The skipper received 43.8% of the vote, compared to 23.8% for his next closest competitor…a serious beat down! With the win, Baxter will move on to the HAWG BOWL in late December to slug it out against the other monthly winners for a shot at a free fishing trip!
Baxter was unavailable for comment after his victory (he had a prior commitment with his mustache stylist), but his agent said that “Iron Mike” will be ready for the big dance later this year.
