Surf Snook from Costa Rica!

April 5, 2012 By JD 9 Comments

JK with his snook. Yeaaaa....finally!

O ur pal and regular fishwithjd reader Jay Kennedy risked life, limb and several layers of epidermis for this Costa Rican snook taken in the surf. Here’s his tale…

I woke up at 3 am on Thursday and headed to the mouth of Rio Baru and fished util about 10 am, changing lures like crazy,” says Jay. “And finally, I saw a beast chasing a school of mullet. My steelheader instinct took over and I threw on a gold and orange 3/4 oz Little Cleo. After about 5 casts…WHAAAAAAAM!!! Snook!! Well, these fish get pissed in the surf and it rolled, clearing a good 3 feet out of the the water before taking off and burning my thumb! Click here to read more…

Hot Technique: Trolling brined baitfish for trout & landlocked salmon

April 3, 2012 By JD 7 Comments

Threadfin shad ready to go…all brined up in Atlas-Mike’s Brite & Tight

When trolling for landlocked salmon and trout, you can catch plenty of fish on hardware like spoons, hootchies and plugs, but to take your game to the next level, try dragging brined-up baitfish!

Thereadfin shad, minnows, small plug-cut herring and anchovies all work well for his method and, when pulled through the water, a properly rigged bait gives off tons of flash…plus you have the added benefit of an offering that smells like the real thing too…because it is!

Here’s how to do it…Click here to read more…

I guess we’re not alone on the West Coast: Anglers may turn to shooting fish-eating seals in Ireland

March 21, 2012 By JD 23 Comments

Jjust a few days back, we told you about the Feds authorizing the use of lethal force against salmon, steelhead and sturgeon-munching sea lions below Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River(see the story here). Well, apparently, the West Coast isn’t the only place dealing with marauding marine mammals eating more than their fare share of fish!

Some anglers in Ireland are getting so fed up with the seals decimating fish populations in the Quoile River that they are considering taking up arms against the beasts if the government doesn’t relocate them. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

Columbia River sea lions: Time to pay the Piper!

March 20, 2012 By JD 15 Comments

State and federal biologists estimate that California sea lions have eaten between 1.5 and 4 percent of all returning adult Columbia River salmon at Bonneville Dam each year during the past eight years. But as of March 16, NOAA Fisheries has authorized the use of Lethal Force to curb predation.

I’m sure PETA and others will raise hell, but in my mind, those folks don’t have a leg to stand on until the start actually doing something that helps the animals…like restore habitat, etc. When was the last time you saw a member of PETA buying raffle tickets or auction items at a Ducks Unlimited, Rocky MOuntain Elk Foundation, Costal Conservation Association or Trout Unlimited dinner? Those cats are all the real animal advocates, not kooks who spray paint fur coats. But, alas, I digress…

Jig Fishing Basics for Pre-Spawn Bass

March 19, 2012 By JD 1 Comment

Bass Patrol Jig: A good place to start!

Early in the spring, when bass are in a pre-spawn mode and haven’t yet come up into the shallows, you can have some unbelievably good days by fishing deep with jigs.

While we’re kinda on the backside of what is traditionally considered “jig season” (late fall through early spring), there’s still time to get out and hammer a bunch of fish. Here’s how to do it: Click here to read more…
