Chasing the Vampire Steelhead of South America

April 1, 2011 By JD 16 Comments

Don't get your hands too close!

The vampire steelhead…known to locals as “pez diablo” exist in a very small handful of streams in southern Chile. They are rare, hard fighting, evil beasts that few have ever encountered. To read all about these amazing fish, check out my article in the current issue (April 2011) of Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine

Coho salmon slowly returning to California’s Russian River

March 26, 2011 By JD 3 Comments

Scientists working on the recovery of endangered coho salmon in northern California appreciate success even if it comes in small doses. Field biologists from the California Department of Fish and Game recently reported that the fall of 2010 produced the largest number of returning coho in tributaries of the Russian River in more than a decade.

Prior to the launch of a recovery program in 2001, the number of returning adult coho salmon averaged less than four per year. These low numbers were the catalyst for the Russian River Coho Salmon Captive Broodstock Program, a recovery effort in which offspring from hatchery-reared adults are released into the river system. This past season, biologists estimate that more than 190 adult coho returned to the Russian River system, beginning with early storms in October and peaking in December. Click here to read more…

Nor Cal: Water & Snow everywhere!

March 24, 2011 By JD 4 Comments

The Howe Ave. parking lot on the American River underwater

Tthe calendar says “spring” but Northern California has been getting hammered by a series of huge winter storms all week which have delivered serious amounts of rain to the lower elevations and many feet of snow to the high country…the likes of which we haven’t seen since I was a kid.

Of course, all that weather isn’t without complications. Most NorCal rivers are raging and the reservoirs are full. The Sacramento River is currently running around 100,000 CFS and getting very close to flood stage. With all the snow in the high country, let’s keep our fingers crossed that there are no Pineapple Express-style warm storms heading this way! On a positive note, we should have plenty of water this year!Click here to read more…

Catch fish, feed people: The Oregon Tuna Classic

March 23, 2011 By JD 1 Comment

The Oregon Tuna Classic series of fun albie fishing events is coming to 4 different ports this summer. This is an awesome event — you go and have a ball catching fish and then do a good deed by feeding some hungry folks. I know some of the guys involved in this and all I can say is great people = great event.

I’ll fill ya in more as the summer progresses but to get some inside dope, click HERE

Stormy afternoon on Clear Lake

March 22, 2011 By JD 6 Comments

Photo: Fred Contaoi

Nor Cal has been getting hammered by storms this week…which makes for some lousy fishing. On the bright side, however, you get treated to some dramatic scenes like this one our pal Big Fred Contaoi shot with his iPhone on Clear Lake the other day.

Doesn’t this look like one of those photos on a motivational poster — the kind you see on the walls in the reception area of many businesses — ya know, with some sort of catchy phrase like “The greater the struggle, the sweeter the reward…” or something like that.

In any case…great shot, Big Boy! Thanks!
